Thoughts on Theodore

We're naming DS2 Theodore to honor my grandfather whose name was Fedor (Russian version). DH and I were chatting last night and he casually mentioned that some people will have Christian associations with the name. Which got me confused because it's not something I would think off. To me it's just "old school" or Greek-based name. What do you think?

  • I like Theodore and the NN Theo.

  • I'm not sure what you mean by "Christian associations"?

    I like Theodore nn Ted.

  • I'm not sure what Christian  associations would be for that name, is there a St. Theodore?

    I love the name, FWIW.

  • To me it's old school, and that is what makes it cool.  Had we had a boy, this would have been a top contender.  We would have used Teddy as the NN.
  • I love it! nn Theo is adorable as well

  • It is a great name. Don't give it too much thought!
  • We considered this because it is DHs grandfather's name. It is on our middle name list because it doesnt sound very good with our other son's name, like completely a different style. I do like it though. DH has been pushing for just Theo, but I would rather not use just a nn.
  • i really don't like it. for me it's too formal and old sounding.

  • I really like it and don't immediately have any "Christian associations" with the name. I think it's more stately and presidential than religious.

  • Thanks ladies. By Christian associations he meant the names which immediately evoke some connection to the new testament or imply the religion of the family. Like it would be strange for a child to be named Christopher or Christine if the family was Jewish, kwim? Or for me Benedict is also is along those lines (I believe there were more Popes with that name than any other). But I definitely wouldn't place Theodore in that category.

Oh and for what it's worth, we are both mixed - one parent Christian, one parent Jewish and we chose not to follow either religion: fully faith-free home if you will ;)

Either way - I'm loving Theodore and we're using it (Teddy for a nickname, Theo is just too hard to pronounce for some Russian relatives). Plus I think it goes well with DS1's name: Isaac (nn Ikey), who was named after Dh's grandfather in turn.

  • I love Theodore, am very biased to it!  It means gift of God and the root Theo is Greek for God, so it comes up in a lot of ecumenical writings.

I think Theodore and Isaac do go very well together!  There's another November  2010 mommy who named her son Theodore Isaac!

  • I like the nn Teddy but don't really care for Theodore.  So, I might still use it but he'd always be Teddy!

  • I love it.  It makes me think of Theodore Roosevelt who was awesome.  I don't see any 'Christian associations.'

You can also use Theo, Teddy, or Ted as nicknames.

  • Theodore Robert is our #1 name if we have a boy. Teddy Roosevelt is my favorite president, and DH are huge history buffs. I like Teddy and TR as nicknames. Also, Christian Bale's character in Little Women was also called Teddy, and yes!
