Re: Nursing Bras/Tops
i bought a few tanks the other night (good ones were on sale at diapers.com) - my SIL who nursed her 3 children was more adamant about me needing the tanks instead of bras. since i don't know any better, i bought them (plus i hate bras, lol, and i figure a tank would be more comfortable).
i guess it's personal preference.
ETA - i bought 1 band size and cup size up from where i am now, which is sort of like 3 cup sizes b/c right now i am a D, and they sell sizes D/DD or F/G.
With DS I had 3 or 4 nursing tanks that I wore all the time, like, falling apart can't wear them for this next baby, all the time. I felt a million times more comfortable pumping at work when I pulled my shirt up and didn't have a bare midriff- I don't know why, it's not like I was in public, but it made me feel less naked ;-)
As for other nursing tops, I had a few, but for the most part I wore a nursing tank under my shirt so I wasn't exposing my belly if I was in public. I didn't nurse in public that often either. I think I bought one tank top before hand, and the others after.

Here's my 2 cents..during pregnancy I was a DD, afterwards when I finally got measured for nursing bras 4 weeks after DD was born I was an H cup. So I would not buy traditional sized nursing bras before your LO is here and your milk comes in, you know nursing will work, etc... I did have on hand 1 Target brand nursing tank. Was not at all supportive enough for out and about wear but I had to wear something 24/7 because of the leaking. Within hours of being home DH went out and bought me 3 more. And I wore them to death. At my incision check at 2 weeks I got measured for some very forgiving Bravado bras that were sized s, m, l, xl at the hospitals mother and baby/lactation shop. That was helpful because I was overwhelemed by the choices. All that to say, I'd have a couple of nursing tanks on hand and be prepared to want more and then plan to buy properly sized nursing bras at some later point.
As for nursing shirts, really that's so person specific. I had no problems nursing in public using v-neck tops and stretch boatneck types. But a lot of people prefer to be more covered up. The layered nursing tank under a cardigan thing works for many for whom the nursing tanks are supportive enough. Didn't really work for me. I had/have one nursing shirt though for those odd times when I really didn't want to be too exposed. I only wore it once or twice, it wasn't particularly flattering.
If you plan to bf long term you will want nursing tanks. Nothing is more annoying that having to undo a normal bra to nurse! I would wait until your milk is in to buy them because your size can definitely change.
I did own two nursing tanks which I took to the hospital, but I didnt' love them and wouldn't buy them again. They were pretty darn unflattering. For the first few days you won't want to wear a bra anyway. Next time I would just wear my maternity tanks for the first week or so and then start with the nursing bras.
Because we're fancy like that.
Have you looked at the new Undercover Mama nursing tanks? They make ANY shirt a nursing shirt by hooking to your nursing bra...so you don't have to buy a bunch of nursing or maternity shirts. Love them!
