My baby is going bald!

I know it's normal for me to have some hair loss, but DD started losing hair about a day after I started. She has a big bald spot of the back of her head now, primarily where her head touches while she's sleeping. I've noticed her losing quite a bit while I'm bathing her. Poor thing didn't start with much and now she's losing it. Does anyone know if this is normal? Maybe it's because I EBF and it's from my hormonal changes? Should I call the pedi? Should she sleep in a hairnet like my grandmother did? Kidding on that last part...

Re: My baby is going bald!

  • I've noticed this with DS as well. We joke that he has "male pattern baldness". I think it's normal for babies to lose some hair.

  • I've heard it's normal for mommy and baby to lose hair around the same time.  My DS lost his hair around 1 month though and it's just now coming back in.  Mine has been coming out in globs for about a month now.  Ugh, gross.  I hate cleaning my bathroom floor.  haha.

  • My DD has an area in the back where the hair is getting super thin. My sister (who is a hairdresser and has 2 little girls) swears by always putting a small soft blanket behind their head whenever they're sitting on in a bouncy chair, carseat or laying down on the back of their head. But since my LO is at a grabbing phase, I can't do that because she'll grab the blanket from behind her head. I try to keep a cotton cap on my DD at night so she won't grab the back of her hair too much.

  • Yes, babies hair falling out is completely normal.

That being said, I had a TON of hair when I was born (My mom could put it in pony tails when I was 3 months old), and the doctor always told my mom that it would fall out. It never did. So I was convinced that my LO's hair was not going to fall out.

It all fell out...except his rat tail.

But now it's growing back in...blonde.

  • It is completely normal.  DS hair stopped falling out arount 6 months and he grew in the most beautiful blond hair.  DD is currently losing hers and I can't wait to see what will end up growing in.

  • Same thing happened to my DS. He had 2 spots, one on each side of his head, and I had to wash his sheets often because there was hair all over them :(. Lol. It has already started growing back, though! I've read that it is completely normal!

  • My son was born with a full head of blonde hair. I've sadly been watching it thin out over the last month, at the same time as mine. He has a practically bald ring around his head too but it's kinda cute.
  • Emilie and I are both just starting to get our hair back. This is normal. For us it's hormones, for them I think the hairloss is mostly from the friction of sleeping.
