Preemies

Will your doctor tell you if you should go on "lock down"?

Gabe's neos and pedi have never said a word about "lock down" to us.  They also had no concerns about him going to daycare starting in November (he would have gotten the RSV shot monthly, though).  That might not happen now that I am a SAHM (though if a job comes around, I'll take it).

  • Mine haven't said anything either. And I specifically asked about it. I'm still debating travelling back East for Thanksgiving. Our pulmonologist and pedi made it sound like nbd

  • The only time I've ever heard of lockdown is from this board. My pedi and neo never mentioned this at all, other than to tell us to avoid public places until they received all their 6 month vaccines.

We will not be on lockdown this winter (my guys will be 8 months old) but I will take precautions.

  • I've only heard it about it on this board. BUT we did get a big talk from the NICU nurses about "using common sense" with people being around LO when we were discharged. We got another "talk" from the pedi at his 2 month. appt. and again last night when we went to orientation for the RSV shot clinic.

It was all stuff I think a mom of a preemie would think of. Lots of hand washing, avoid people who've been sick/had a fever, keep the car seat covered in a store or do your best to prevent people from getting in his face. With our 6 yo I will have to go out, but just plan on being extra diligent :) GL!

  • We definitely were told about it in the NICU, but DS was 26 weeker who was on the vent for over 2 months and went home on O2 so that is probably why.

  • Our NICU's standard discharge orders include 'house arrest' for two months after going home (except for Dr appts, of course).  I didn't take LO ANYWHERE besides his pedi appts until today (he's 5 wks adjusted, and we've been home for 5 1/2 wks).  Today I just took him to pick up some lunch, and it was more a 'test run' for me to get used to taking him out.  I wouldn't take him to Target or a crowded place unless I had to - probably until he's 10 wks adjusted (also when he starts daycare), if possible.  But I'm at the point now where I feel okay about taking him to a friend's house for dinner or to my in laws etc.

  • Our NEO told us house arrest for 8 weeks after coming home, limited exposure in the summer, and lockdown during RSV season. They also told us no one should hold S except grandparents if possible for the first year!

This. "Lockdown" for me just means to be extra villigent about enclosed public places and lots of sanitizing/hand washing. I fully plan on going for lots of walks, though.

  • Our pedi has mentioned lockdown for H, but not JS.  H has lung issues, so the smallest thing can land him in the hospital...see my post above.
