So, question for breastfeeding moms who went back to work. I have been back at work for 3 weeks, and today noticed that my milk production has decreased by about 50% (I was pumping a 4oz bottle for him every 3 hours, which is what he drinks) but now I am getting about 2oz per pump. Did anyone find this happening when they went back to work? Does it have something to do with primarily pumping now? Anyone been successful in increasing production while pumping at work? Thanks y'all!
Re: Milk Production Decrease at Work?
I'm not sure what kind of pump you're using but if you're using a Medela Freestyle (or the PISA, I think) you need to change out the membranes about once a month. The membranes are the soft, yellow parts. You can find the replacements on amazon, BRU, BBB, anywhere that sells the Medela pumps.
Also, I pump in my office but I don't work during this time. I try to relax, look at pics of LO, think of LO, surf the bump, anything to help me relax and let down. Stress and watching the bottles fill up (or not) can actually hurt your output.
One last piece of advice, make sure you're pumping as many times as LO is eating. So for example, my LO eats at 9, noon and 3 when I'm at work and I pump at those times to keep my supply up with her feeding schedule.
HTH, GL!!!
I've had no problem with pumping at work. I think the first week back is usually a little weird until your body gets more used to it.
I started out pumping 3x a day which I think really helped my production. Once I was more used to it, I switched to just 2x a day. I get 10-12 oz a day from 2 ten minute sessions. Make sure you drink a lot of water while you are at work and eat healthy snacks.
Add pumping sessions/nursing sessions as much as you can. Nurse nurse nurse!!
That's my best advice. My supply tanked at 6 months (after 3 months of pumping at work) and no matter what I did nothing helped. Just keep adding nursing sessions and maybe a session before bed/early in the a.m. if you aren't already doing that.
