Before being pregnant, I'd never experienced heartburn. It's awful! What do you ladies take? Do you still eat whatever you want and just take a pill after? I'm craving chips and hot salsa and am having nightmares of heartburn just thinking about it.

Re: Heartburn Question
I'm in the same boat. I had never experienced it until pregnancy, and now I have it really bad all day long, even if all I have is water.
I'm allergic to Tums, but some woman swear by it and it's safe during pregnancy -- just follow the directions and don't exceed the dosage.
My doctor also approved over the counter Zantag 75 mg (ranitidine hydrochloride) -- which is even given to infants that have acid reflux. That works really well for me, but best as a preventative. I take one first thing in the morning and wait 30min - 1 hour before eating breakfast. I then take another in the evening 30 min - 1 hour before dinner.
Drinking milk (a base) also helps. Sadly, avoiding spicy food is one of the best ways to prevent it -- pills can only do so much. Get a very, very mild salsa and drink some milk while you have it.

It's just so hard when you're craving it. Woe is me!
I've never really gotten heartburn as much as I get it now, and that seems like an every day occurence. The doc said I could use Tums bc they are safe but I prefer to use pickles bc thats what I used prior to being pregnant. The acids in pickles and the juice help counteract the acids in your stomach and calm the heartburn.
I like pickles and this is one thing that I have found to really work. So try it if you'd like
I am going to try that! Thanks!
I take Target's generic Zantac & it works great. I take mine after breakfast & then before dinner.
I have struggled with acid reflux since high school, so pre pregnancy I took one prilosec every morning. That is the only thing that worked for me. I stopped taking it first trimester (and suffered dearly, zantac, tums, etc. did nothing for me), and started taking it again 2nd trimester.
Two of m y girlfriends who are pregnant were both prescribed prilosec by their doctors when they found out they were pregnant. I asked my doctor about the discrepencies in doctor's opinions and she said that it's classified as it is (not sure) becuase they have only done animal studies. She said it should be fine, but it's not always recomended b/c it's not tested in pregnant women.
