Water?

At the pedi today, we were discussing starting solid foods. We agreed to wait at least another month. But the pedi told me that when she does starts solids, I should also start giving her water to drink. When I asked how much, she said just however much DD wants. I haven't really heard much about giving LOs water. Anyone have any insight on this?

Re: Water?

  • We were told to start her on solids now and also start giving her a bottle of water a day. He said she probably wouldn't take it all right now but to offer it at least during the day. He said by the time she's 6 months, she could replace a formula bottle with a full bottle (5 oz or more) of water if she acted like she wanted to -- meaning she would probably go longer in between bottles and she would just drink the water througout the day.

  • Do you BF or ff? My pedi said that a BF baby doesn't need water even when they start solids.

I do a combination. I can't pump enough at work, so I BF while I'm home and she gets formula while I'm at work.

We ff so that might be why he told us to give water.

Interesting, my pedi never mentioned givng my LO water at all and I FF too.  She told me that I can start giving LO cereal once a day (oatmeal, rice, whole grain - whatever I prefer) & then at 5 months start with veggies/fruits.  Not once was water mentioned.

  • my pedi hasn't mentioned water. DD1's pedi didn't talk about water until she was like 9 months old and still waking at night to eat. He told me I could give her water to try and get her to stop waking.

  • It makes sense that they would not need water. Their diet is mostly liquid whether formula or BM.
