s/o non-dairy post: how much dairy do you cut out?

So I'm a bit slow here, but after reading the non-dairy post the other day, I'm curious how much dairy you cut out.  Do you cut out all milk, butter, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, in your diet?  Do you look at food packaging to make sure there are no dairy ingredients?  When you are baking something that calls for milk, do you substitute or use a different recipe?  Given that a number of you mentioned how much better you feel after cutting out dairy, I'm definitely considering it, and I'm just wondering how much cutting out you does.

  • I try not to eat any strait dairy products at all. Sometimes I'm weak and still get a cheeseburger or something like that. When cooking, I usually just omit the butter and sub in rice milk for any milk. I do still eat and cook with cream-based soups. I don't worry much about dairy ingredients in things I buy (baked goods, etc.).

  • Originally, I cut out ev-ery-thing for DD - if I had any dairy at all, she was crazy fussy, had poo problems and a rash on her face. Her digestive system has matured somewhat, and she has been able to handle very, very small quantities of dairy in my diet for about six weeks now. Since we realized that, every once and a while I have very small quantities of dairy (like when I forgot to say "no cheese" on my salad the other day), but I still go out of my way to avoid dairy completely. Which, honestly, I really miss. Especially chocolate, cheese and butter. But, I love my baby more. And I also am loving clear skin...so if I can find good substitutes for the stuff I really miss, I may keep this up, even after DD weans.

  • We avoid all dairy, casein included.  We sub with coconut milk, we cook with either olive oil, ghee (butter but the milk / casein protein is removed) or coconut oil.  Dairy is in A LOT of products so even small amounts can really add up.  We don't buy a lot of packaged foods so we don't have to look for it that much though.
  • I've cut out the obvious dairy....milk, cheese, yogurt. Sometimes I'm weak and will have cheese (god I love cheese) and ice cream.  And I always feel worse for it the next day.

I tried HEB's Mootopia - lactose free milk - and its worked really well for me.  Also, Almond milk is good in cereal and oatmeal.
