Baby food question

I've been trying to give DD applesauce, oatmeal, bananas, and pears since we got the go ahead at her 4 month appt. When anyone tries to feed her, it seems as though she "eats" it but also spits it out at the same time. Kind of hard to explain, but it's almost as if she doesn't know to swallow it. I tried feeding her a spoonful of something and then giving her the bottle, so she'll swallow, but I don't think it's working anymore.

Not really sure what to do. I plan on bringing it up at her next appointment, but I was hoping she'd have gotten better by then.

Any suggestions?

Re: Baby food question

  • She just might not be ready for it. She could still have that tongue reflex thing. Sorry I can't remember what it is called. But it is where her tongue is doing the motions of drinking from a nipple and in order to use a spoon her tongue needs to move a different way. Talk to your pedi about it but I would hold off on food for a bit and try again at a later date.

I've never heard of that- thanks! I'm going to look into that now.

  • Exactly what PP said. Joshuah did the same thing at first, but I just kept working with him. He still has the Thrust reflex i believe its called. so sometimes he still spits it out. but it is so fun to feed them and see them experience new foods. I did start with veggies after cereal and now we are working on fruits, The peaches upset J's stomace so we will go back to those in a month and try them. But he loves loves beets, and apples w/ blueberries.

  • Thanks ladies! I really appreciate the advice. I went out and bought some peas and sweet potatoes, so we'll see how that goes.

  • I 2nd all of this but have you thought about introducing some vegetables to her rather than just fruits?
