Baby Vitamins

Do you give your LO vitamins?  I'm EBF and the doctor recommended vitamins when Wyatt was 1 week.  I started them right away. He hated them.  I quickly learned that I had to give it to him in 2 separate doses.  If I gave him it all at once, he would vomit, or choke on it. I made a decision to stop giving him the vitamins at some point in the last 2 months.  He has difficulty with getting extremely raspy, and I felt like the vitamins were contributing to that. Now I'm feeling a bit badly that I'm not giving him the vitamins. However, he appears healthy and he's a happy baby. I just wondered if others were giving vitamins?

Re: Baby Vitamins

  • We give Vitamin D in the form of Carlson's Baby Drops.  It's one drop once per day.  We tried poly-vi-sol and di-vi-sol, and LO's hated both and got really fussy after.  We've had no problems with the drops.

  • Just the Carlson's Baby Vitamin D drops. I EBF also, but can't really see any reason he'd need any extra vitamins other than Vit D, which I'm sure I don't get enough of on a daily basis since something like 90% of the population doesn't. Plus, those drops are only 1 a day and are tasteless and have no dye, so I don't have any real issue with giving them to DS.

Vitamin supplements aren't particularly bioavailable, and a lot of sources don't recommend giving any to EBF babies, especially if the mother doesn't have any vitamin deficiencies.

  • We also give D Drops in from Carlson. EBF babies only need vitamin d. Most BFing moms (well, really most people) are vitamin d deficient, so babies actually aren't getting enough. Of course, I also live in Ohio where 80% of the year none of us can get the vitamin d from the sun. I just put a drop on my nipple every day and DS doesn't even notice. He did fine on D-Vi-Sol, but I saw no reason to give him the extra crap when all he needs is the vitamin. Plus, D Drops are way cheaper (the whole bottle lasts a year).
