Oh no!!  Had you even talked to her about yet?  I hope the poor girl didn't freak out!  How old were you when you started?

I have three girls too- wait until they all have it the same week.  Yikes.

Well, congrats, mom!  Had she gone through any other changes of puberty yet?  Usually the period comes after leg hair, smelly pits, and breasts.

I just bought my DD her first bras, and she's 10.  She's the last one of her friends to start developing!

My 6 year old has to wear bras but I don't think I would be ready for her to start her period. I did watch on the news that a young girl about the same age had started her period. They inserted some type of hormone thing into her arm to stop it.

My oldest started at 10 and I started at 9. Good luck mama! Just be there for her and help explain things to her.

My daughter is also 9. It seems like lots of young girls are going through puberty early. Mine is not, but I've explained what happens. Have you seen the books by American Girl? I would make sure she has some books that explain things in a way a 9 year old girl can understand.

Good luck, Mama. I think I would go out for ice cream... something that helped me feel like my baby girl wasn't so grown-up.

Oh... I should add that once you recover from the shock, you need to come back to the board and give the rest of us advice. Let us know how it goes.

I am late to responding, but this was me. Started at 9, but it went away for a year and came back regular at age 11.  It made me very self conscious, because most of my friends didn't start theirs until 13.  They never knew I started because I never talked about it.  Try to make her feels comfortable and not awkward about it. At that age I had no idea what was going on and had a hard time dealing with it. Good luck!

I hate to break it to you but 9 is pretty common nowadays.  I agree w/ the American Girl books.  I read them when I was that age and it really helped me understand & be prepared.  (I lived with my grandma and she had no idea what a period really was - how a woman w/ 3 kids doesn't know the reproductive system is a mystery to me.)

I personally started mine at 9 as well. I had no idea what was happening because my mom had never told me anything. I literally thought I was bleeding to death. My mother was in complete shock, and didn't know what to do. My only advice is to make her feel comfortable about the whole thing, and do not tell the world that she started. My mother did that to me, and it was so darn embarassing. Also teach her how to use pads, count her cycle days and so on. My mother never did this either, and I started my cycle at school a few times. I was so embarassed because I was the only girl in grade school with my period.

I had no idea 9 years old was common.  I started mine just after I turned 13.  I nanny for a 10 year old girl; I guess I need to be more aware of it.
