1st Trimester

Fetus measuring 1 week behind.....

Hi girls,

I was hoping some of you have experience with this and can offer words of advice or encouragement.  Thank you.

I had my ultrasound this morning.  The tech told me the baby is measuring 6w1d.  By my calculations I should be *at least* 7 weeks today.  (I got a positive pregnancy test on July 24, so I assume I was AT LEAST 10dpo at that point-- that would make me *at least* 7 weeks pregnant today).  If I was only 6w1d pregnant like the tech suggested, that means I would have conceived only 3 days before I got a positive pregnancy test.  IMPOSSIBLE.  There was a heartbeat, though not strong enough to measure.  The tech said the yolk sac looked great and the gestational sac looked smooth and was in a good placement.  She said she thought the fact that I have strong symptoms (lots of nausea, exhaustion, etc.) and the fact that the baby had a heartbeat were good signs.  Oh- I also have a cyst on my right ovary.  Of course now I am worried.

  • Honestly, i think you got great news! Your baby is healthy and well, and everything seems to be going great...He or she may be a little small, but one week in either direction does not seem like an indication that something is wrong. Congrats on a healthy baby!

  • Oh that happened to me! I went in for my 8 week appointment and found out I was meansuring at 6 weeks 3 days. When I went back for another ultrasound 2 weeks later, I was actually measuring ahead a week! I asked the doctor both times and they assured me that it wasn't cause for concern. Best wishes for a H&H pregnancy to you!

  • My dates were off at first.  I drove myself bonkers worrying about it.  Sounds like you got good news.  Focus on the baby itself and not the weeks.  You will be much more at ease.

    Good luck!

  • How do you guys get "measured" so often? My first appt they did nothing, and my second one will be right at 11 weeks, and my doc told me they still might not check for the heartbeat. What are they doing for you that they are measuring how far along you are? My doc told me that since I was absolutely certain of my LMP date, that they would go by that date for their calculations. Except I know when we actually conceived (it's down to 1 or 2 times that I can narrow it down to) and it seemed to be 17 days after my period.... so I would think maybe I'm not quite as far along since ovulation usually occurs earlier than 17 days.

But aside from all that babbling, do they really measure your fetus growth everytime? And do they do this through an ultrasound?

  • When I went for my u/s two weeks ago, the baby measured 7 weeks (about 1cm) and I thought I was 9 weeks along.  The heartbeat was in the perfect range so I didn't question it.  I wasn't happy about being two weeks further away from 2nd tri but as long as the baby is healthy, it can take it's sweet time!

  • This happened to me....my dating ultrasound was what I *thought* was 7 weeks 4 days, but baby was measuring 6 weeks, 5 days. The 'chart' of what you think you are at is based off a "typical" 28 day cycle. My cycles range from 31-34 days, so my OB explained that it made perfect sense that the baby was measuring behind. Do you possibly have longer cycles? All has been well since that first appt! And actually, at my anatomy scan, my little guy was measuring back up to my original due date, so you never know. Sounds like everything is right on track, don't worry about it!

  • They measured when they did my first ultrasound (I thought it was 8 wks due to my LMP but measured at 6). They did the follow up appointment 2 weeks later to confirm the due date and measured again via ultrasound. Will 11 weeks be your first ultrasound? Every doctor is different, but if you're concerned that you haven't had one yet, let them know!

  • No I wont have an ultrasound at my 11 wk appt and havent had one yet. At my 6 wk appointment, my doctor said they probably wouldn't check for a heartbeat for 2 more appointments (another 8 weeks). I go to a group of doctors, and she said sometimes she will check and see for a heartbeat at 10 or 11 weeks, but you can't always find it, and that not every doctor in the practice does this. I am scheduled with a different one next time, so I really don't know if this one will try for the heartbeat or not. Regardless, that is not really related to measuring my due date, but I just mean my ultrasound probably won't be for quite some time... closer to 18-20 weeks I'm guessing.

And my cycle is typically 28-29 days.... but I still don't think I conceived until day 17 of my cycle.

  • Just popping in to say don't worry about the cyst. I had an u/s before I (or my doctors) realized I was pregnant and my PCP sent a report to my ob/gyn saying that I had a fibroid and a cyst on my left ovary.

After discovering that I was pregnant (surprise!) at my first pregnancy u/s the tech told me that the cyst that my PCP had noted 3 weeks earlier was actually an early sign of my pregnancy. The cyst is there to help support the pregnancy so don't worry about it.
