Benadryl help.. my son will not take it

What do you do if your child refuses benadryl?

My son has been reacting to a few things recently. We're not sure what's going on.  he was tested negative for salmon a few months ago so we introduced it as plain as it gets (he didn't actually eat it, but it did touch his lips and some parts of the chin).. where ever salmon touched he had a skin reaction.  We'll obviously hold off on the salmon for a while.

Similar with strawberries. He's had them before a few times but isn't a fan. Never was tested though. I tried giving him some couple of days ago and it touched his lips and again he had a skin reaction.  I ate strawberries (same day) and kissed his cheeks and he had a rash there. (again, we're now avoiding strawberries until his next test).

So back to the question.. It's almost impossible to give my child benadryl.  We try the squirt thingy, we try the spoon dosage, we try the cup.  He has a full melt down when he sees the benadryl bottle.  he's usually not hungry at the time so we can't put it in the food.

Any tricks?

  • Is he old enough for the chewables?  My kids like those better than the liquid.

Probably not. He's 22 months. I'm sure you have to be at least 3 y/o.  But i will check it out and maybe it's 2.. which would be fantastic! thanks!

  • We use the melt aways, and they work great! They come grape and cherry flavored.

This.  We bought the target brand ones because Benedryl had a bunch of recalls lately (I think it's back on the shelves now) and it has made giving the meds so much easier.

  • thank you everyone.. i will give those a try.

I just purchased so many boxes of the individual spoons of benadryl thinking he would totally love them -nope. He thinks it's poison.

EDIT - i see that the meltaway ones are for age 6+.. do you know if them make them for younger kids?

  • thank you.. never knew there was such a thing as flavoring for meds! good to know.

I just came back from our local pharmacy and they had no benadryl chewable ones, but i ended up buying Claritin chewable tablets (2+ y/o) so if he wont take the liquid meds before i buy the chewable benadryl, i'll just give him claritin chewable tablets.

Does anyone use claritin instead of benadryl??

  • I wonder if you could put it in his milk? DD hated her antibiotic, so I had to stick the syringe way back in teh back of her cheek to where she pretty much had to swallow it. I felt like a mean mommy, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

Our pedi allergist actually recommended zyrtec over benedryl.  He said that it lasted longer and didn't make them as drowsy.  Haven't tried it yet though.

  • I'm not sure about Claritan but I know that Zyrtec works the same as Benadryl. My LO is actually really good w/taking meds but he did give us a problem w/his Zantac (which I don't blame him...ewww) and I would have to squirt it on the side of his mouth so he wouldn't taste it but now he is fine w/it. Maybe your LO might get used to it when he sees it helps him too. Wishful thinking!!!
  • Zyrtec definitely helps my son way better than Claritin. You could see a complete difference with his seasonal allergies when I tried Claritin since it was cheaper.

OP, if you can't get him to take the Benadryl in it's original packaging have you thought about using the medicine syringes and sucking it into it. Don't let him see you get it ready though. Just come to where ever he is and say "medicine time or meh-meh time" whatever you say. lol...

    good luck!

we have tried that. many times.  we no longer show him the bottle.  I think he might be more afraid of the syringe than the bottle actually.

Thanks ladies! i'll give Zyrtec a try also.

  • We actually had better luck with Claritin than Zyrtec.  Our allergist and pedi suggested trying one and then switching to the other if needed.  J was a mess on Zyrtec- but thankfully they all do the same thing.
