Shopping for Fall/Winter

Has anyone started thinking about getting their LO's ready for cooler weather?

I have this tendency to think that he has TONS of stuff left over from the previous season so there's no point in shopping, then I find that most of his old stuff doesn't fit him anymore.

I know, I'm not so smart :P

Anyhoo, I then go on a shopping binge and feel guilty about that. Terrible vicious circle.

So what's up with the shopping? Done any yet?

Re: Shopping for Fall/Winter

  • And yes, I edited the title as it is indeed "shopping" and not "shooping."

All though what was that Salt n' Pepa song? Wasn't that about shooping?

LOL, yes! Shoop, shoop a doop!

Sadly, I have nothing else to add. This is my first time shopping for seasonal clothes for my LO. My mom did tell me if I'd buy less, I'd have more room in her dresser, lol.

  • I'm hoping that the few pairs of long pants I bought her this past spring will still fit.  They should, since they were a tad long then.  Other than that, no shopping.

Re: shopping binge - do you check out places like Goodwill or Salvation Army, yard sales, freecycle, craiglist, etc?

A friend would find craigslist deals like an entire large plastic trash bag full of clothes for $20.  Usually the clothing in the bag was all about the same size, and even if a few were stained or unusable, it was an awesome bargain.

Goodwill had kids' clothes priced at $1 per top and $2 per bottom, so I bought several items with no guilt whatsoever. I did have to spend a bit of time looking through the racks, but it was worth it for the price! Plus I don't get so upset if cheap things get stained or torn.

Or since you are thinking about it now, go through his stuff and see what still fits and what you think M will need.  You can watch for sales and buy one or two items each week.  If you spread the shopping out, it doesn't count as a binge! Stick out tongue

    DD1 is 3, DD2 is 1.
  • I have bought a lot of clothes for DD for every season. I plan to get some Babylegs to pair with the skirts/dresses I bought for the winter time. Have a couple of cardigans for fall and winter. I think I am just about done shopping...just waiting for her to arrive now.

    Yes
  • I usually end up putting it off and then all the clothes are gone, so this year I am promising to buy winter gear early!
  • I caught the end of season sales for clothes last year. LO already has new Christmas jammies and a bunch of other winter clothes that I bought at really low prices.

The older one is another story. He's growing so quickly. I had him try on all of his pants and only 3 fit.

  • I just bought 3 pairs of pants and 2 pairs of long-sleeved jammies.  I still feel confused about sizing.  DS is in 12 months now (can squeeze into some 9 months)...so I thought he'd be in the next size by December.  But the next size is 18 months!  Why the 6 month jump?  I put on the size 18 month pants just to see and they were HUGE!   Guess I have to wing it with 12 months for awhile.

I am yard sale junkie.  Earlier in the year I saw how much of our income was going to daycare and gas realated expenses, and I really shopped.  Both kids have plenty of clothes for winter and fall and next summer.  And their birthdays are coming, so we'll be set.  Since we have such a change in weather here, we have to have sweatshirts at the ready.

  • Adrian has some clothes from last year that should fit b/c I bought them big. But most of them won't fit. They're 24 mo. and he's already growing out of 2T so I need 3T. He needs pants, long-sleeve shirts and sweaters but he already has a jacket. I haven't started shopping yet (it's 104 degrees here so I'm not in the mood, lol) but I don't even want to think about the money I have to spend. Hopefully I'll get some good coupons in the mail!

I try to hit the end of season sales and buy for the coming year. I've got a plastic tote full of colder weather gear that I scooped up in February. I'm rolling the dice on whether or not I guess the size right but so far I've done OK. (I have a feeling that when his growth slows down I might be stuck with some stuff in the wrong season but it was so cheap to buy it on clearance I figure I can sell it or donate it. )

I did that in February and bought summer clothes for Adrian, but I overestimated his growth and most of the clothes I bought are still too big. He's been wearing them and they won't fit next summer, so I'm not buying ahead anymore. I just don't know how fast or slow he'll grow in the upcoming year. Best to just buy as I go :)

  • We're really lucky in that my sisters and mother usually by our kids clothes! I have yet to buy either LO a single stitch of clothing. Although, I think they go overboard....Raquel had way to many outfits this summer....it was kind of a waste. Oh well, her little sister will get good use out of them.

  • We're fortunate to have some hand-me-downs from his cousin, but I'm planning on going to a Tot Swap in the Fall.  Also looking through 80% off clearance at Kohl's right now and today I got a long sleeve shirt for $1 at Walmart.  Clothing I'd even look for deals on Ebay

Shoes are another things.  I got him sized at Stride Rite and they recommended a 5.5W.  She said at this age, their feet can grow every few months.  So why would i spend $40 on one pair of shoes that may not even last until Christmas?  I'm looking for W shoes on sale and may try 6W.  I know it depends on the shoe.  Stride Rite does have some tennies on sale for $20.  I was hoping to get him new sandals but he'll only wear them for another month or so.

Take a chance. Take a risk. Take the initiative. Make your wishes a reality and make your dreams come true!

  • We can potentially still be wearing shorts in November, so I am not worried about it.  By then the stores are already marking down fall stuff, so it works out well.  M has tons of clothes because I love to shop.  I have to put blinders on, or he would get something new every week.  I am not well.....

  • I've been an ebay whore lately and gotten her some holiday outfits, a new coat, winter jammies and a couple of day to day outfits.  The area Early Childhood PTA's all do big sales and I've done fabulously going to 1 or 2 of those in the past.
  • Have not done it yet. Still trying to figure out how much clothes he will need. We have too many warm weather clothes and half of them he has outgrown already and we never even tried them on. I hope not to make the same mistake again.
