F/U to fabric costs post

Today I bought 6 yards of fabric, one pattern, and one roll of cheap batting. Eighty-five dollars and that's with the fabric on sale AND with a 40% off coupon. Am I the only person who thinks that's crazy?

  • So I have come to realize that while sewing used to be economical, it isn't anymore. Really the benefit now is being able to have something that is unique or highly personalized. For example, the valances and bibs I am making are ones I wouldn't be able to buy. And I am going to make Katherine an awesome jumper that I would never find in a store. So for personalizing things to one's taste, sewing is great but it's definitely not an economical choice anymore. :(

  • I agree.  The cost is outrageous but it still makes me smile when Allie picks to wear the dress I made her because "it's her favorite dress, EVER!"  Totally worth the expense every once in awhile :)

This makes me happy. This is why we do it isn't it? So we have precious moments like that.

  • Ugh - It is crazy how expensive fabric has gotten.

  • That does seem kind of expensive if you were at Jo-Ann's.  Was it just normal cotton fabric?  How much was the pattern?  If it was regular price, in the future don't buy a pattern from one of the big manufacturers unless it's on sale for $0.99.  Honestly, I find too many of those patterns really difficult to follow.  I've switched to free online tutorials or patterns from etsy sellers.

But yeah, it pretty much always costs more to make something than to buy it from a reasonable store.  You could compare the cost to a boutique brand.  That always makes me feel a little better.

  • I agree, that sounds really expensive. Like the pp said, patterns are always on sale for .99 so I would wait to buy patterns until the sale. You can always bring your reciept up to the store and have them do an adjustment if a sale pops up soon.

Also I buy most of my fabric at Thanksgiving. JoAnns has GREAT online and instore deals around Thanksgiving. I keep a little stock pile of fabric so I can always have what I need to make various things throughout the year. I might have to make a stop here and there, but I'm getting the majority of my fabric on sale for dirt cheap so I don't mind paying a little extra to finish a project.
