We've know DD has soy and peanut allergies for a couple years now. She has never had an ana reaction. She has been in daycare since she was 3 months old and never once had an issue there.
She starts preschool next week and when I think about the allergies my stomach is in knots. I will admit that I am probably displacing the fact that my baby is going to be going to a real school a little onto this. We learned everything about are allergies while we were with this daycare. They are very well trained in allergy related issues. I feel that they grew with us and were extremley receptive to everything that came along with it.
I have met with the principal and have a meeting tomorrow with her teacher. I have her allergy and asthma action plan. I still need to get in touch with the cafeteria (they aren't in yet and no lunch will be served the first week so I have time).
I know I need to advocate for my child, but I also don't want her labeled "the allergy kid". Is there anything else that you suggest I do? I have a MedicAlert braclet ordered.
Re: Why am I so nervous?
See, I am sort of backwards on how I feel compared to you. I've held off on my son attending daycare because I've worked at the ones here where I live and I don't feel safe having him in their care when it comes to food.
My oldest child (without allergies) has been in school a few years and from what I see from the school's I believe that they'll have no problem ensuring my child with an allergy away from foods I haven't provided.
Either way, it's a scary leap to trust someone. It's especially harder when it's not something that is common and people with out the allergies just don't understand.
I think you're doing everything great. As long as you speak to the appropriate people and have the right action plan set with the school your child should be safe.
Food Allergy Mamma has something about this on her most recent blog post.. HERE.
How about snacks? Are you allowed to leave snacks with the teacher? I'm sure you asked all the right questions.. Even though i'm a couple of more years away before kindergarten, I'm already gathering questions for the school. I think you can never ask too many.
have you spoken to the nurse? will your child be on the school bus?
