St. Joe's or United for delivery

I'm a first time mom. Trying to decide if I should deliver at St. Joe's or United. Would love to hear from those who have deliverd at either, or both. Thannks!

Re: St. Joe's or United for delivery

  • I delivered both my girls at St. Joes (although both were planned c/s, so it may be a little different from those who did vaginal births) and I loved loved loved it. The whole floor was so quiet, hardly ever heard anybody else there. The nurses were all awesome, the first time around when I was having problems with breastfeeding there were multiple nurses who helped me out to make it work.

The room was very nicely sized (although I have nothing to compare that too except North were my best friend gave birth) and I love that I got to stay in the same room for pre-op, post-op and the remainder of my stay.

Both times I didn't want to leave : ) It was like a hotel stay lol.

  • I delivered at United.  Although (thankfully) our LO  didn't need it, United has an excellent NICU right there next to the birth suite.  It gave me some peace of mind beforehand knowing that it was right there.  The nurses, especially my labor nurse, were pretty great with one exception.  I had a c/s though so I was there from Wednesday night through Sunday afternoon so I saw quite a few.  The suites are pretty nice although a little small if you plan on having visitors and the food was surprisingly good.

There also was a lactation consultant that came and helped me when I was having a little difficulty breastfeeding and also a store on the same floor that sold nursing/baby supplies.

All in all, I was very happy with everything there and if we have another baby I will definitely be going back there.

  • Joes. Hands down. Especially if you want to lower your risk for c-section.

Why do you say that?  Just curious.

Because St Joe's is the only hospital in the twin cities with a c/s rate that is acceptable to most health care groups (WHO, AMA, Health Canada, JCAHO). United is a very medically oriented birth hospital, high intervention, high c/s rates. Joe's is much more holistic, much lower intervention and a much lower c/s rate.

Joe's c/s rate has hovered right around the recommended 10% for years. (it typically has one of the lowest, if not the lowest rate in the country.) It was 12% in 2009.

United's 2009 c/s rate was 34%, or almost 3.5 times higher than recommended. This is the 2nd highest rate in the state, behind Abbott (37%).

This. I have several friends who delivered at St. Joes and loved it. They have birthing tubs too. I'm not sure about United but being able to deliver/post op in the same room would be a big deal to me too and St. Joes has this. I've delivered at St. Johns but St. Joes would be my second choice.

Thank you.  I didn't have a choice because of insurance but this is also information that I wasn't aware of.  I did research on United when we moved here last year but I didn't see those statistics.  I had an unplanned c/s because our baby was under stress and her heart rate kept dropping and also other things I won't bore you with but now I'm wondering if I would have delivered somewhere else if things would have been handled differently.

Nothing I can change about it now and I'm thankful to have a healthy baby.

So to OP- sounds like St. Joe's might be the way to go.

you're welcome. I have a bunch of birthy, crunchy friends who stay on top of a lot of this stuff (most of them actually home birth...which isn't for me at all).

I had an unplanned c/s at Regions with my DD. I know it was medically necessary, but I do sometimes wonder if I'd have been at a place like Joes (although Regions' c/s is high, it's not as high as many others) if it would have ended differently. I had a horrible L&D nurse, and the MW on that night was not very good.

I went to Regions because it was free. I did no other research (this was before I met the aforementioned people). I did a heck of a lot more this time, and we're driving 45 minutes plus to Hudson specifically because of my doctor and his fantastic success with VBAC (not to mention his extremely low primary c/s rate as well).

I am also interested in VBAC if we decide to have another LO.  I hope everything goes well for you, good luck!!

  • I had a waterbirth at St. Joe's and loved my stay there.  DH and I were sorry to leave when our 48 hour period was up - we felt very well cared for, it was very quiet, I loved the MWs, and would highly recommend the waterbirth if it's an option for you.  Good luck!

  • United, it was important for us to have immediate access to Childrens, if needed.  Plus, a few friends of mine delivered at St Joes and I was not impressed, nor where they.  Luckily, we didn't need Childrens, but I was induced 3 weeks early, had pre-eclempsia, an emergency C/S, and was stuck in the hospital for 6 nights while they got my BP under control.

I was confident in the care that I received every minute I was there and would highly recommend it to anyone.  While it's not the newest L/D on the block it worked out well for us. They were fantastic about letting DS and DH stay with me the entire time and never had a problem with us using the nursery, needing formula, diapers, etc since DS was cleared to go home after day 3.

  • Well I know that I am delivering at United, because it is a familiar hospital for me, I am also a First Time Mom but I know the hospital for medical issues I had in the past...
  • I honestly didn't think much about it. My family doctor delivered both girls at St Joe's and we had a great experience. I completely agree with the c-section rate being important! I was induced twice and even after 3 hours of pushing with my first not once was a c-section suggested or discussed. Unless you're delivering extremely pre-mature, there isn't a need to have immediate access to the NICU. My first had to go to Children's on her second day of life due to having seizures and it was a 2 minute ambulance ride. She was taken care of just as quickly as she would have been if I'd delivered at United (where I probably would have ended up having a c-section.) Having my own doctor deliver me was way more important than what hospital and he only delivers at St Joe's.
