Food Allergy

F/U to nervous

I took DD to a pedi allergist today. They tested her for soy, casesin, cow's milk, wheat, peanuts, and whey. She was negative for all. So the allergist agreed with the MSPI diagnosis. She said that she should outgrow it and I should continue with my diet and things will be fine.

I am glad but not sure how I know if I am doing enough. I go back to the pedi next Friday and if her stool is clean we are good. If not I am not sure what is next. Can gluten carry through breast milk? Would that be something I could try next?

Re: F/U to nervous

  • that's great news! congrats! It will only get easier for you as time goes on.

You are doing plenty. Just stay away from milk and soy and have a basic diet. When your LO turns 1, you can probably go back to the pedi or allergist and introduce some foods there (or introduce it via BM -which i think is safest way to see if she's still having issues)

Not sure about gluten carrying through BM, but you can do the test on your own. Go gluten free for 2 or 4 weeks and then re-introduce it in your diet..  (it's always worth a try)

I think it's so much easier to do tests like this if you're BFing.

  • So if I understand this correctly, you are eliminating milk and soy and she is still having issues? If this is the case, you must be missing something that has milk/soy in it? or this is something else that is causing a problem. This is why we switched to formula as much as it kill me. At almost 11 months, we are still milk.soy free and he is doing great. We were told to try after 1 yr to introduce one or the other and see what happens.

We were still getting a positive test for blood in her stool about 4.5 weeks after I went milk/soy free.  The pedi asked me to be super strict for 4 more weeks and retest.  In the mean time, I wanted to see if there was any more information I could get from an allergist so we went.

I think that I will see if the test comes back positive next time.  If it does, I will go gluten free too for a month.  If it is still positive then, we will look at formula.  I am hoping that DF and SF will be enought but gluten won't be too bad either.

Are you worried after 5 weeks, it is not working and now 4 more weeks and ifs not working, you do something else for another month. That is 3 months of your daughter's body rejecting what you are giving and put uncomfortableness and pain on your daughter. I only ask this because I am lactose intolerant and I can't imagine going for 3 month eating stuff that my body rejects and I know the pain and uncomfortableness and what is going on, but your daughter has no idea.

Please understand I am not trying to put you down for your actions, just wanting you to be aware from another point of view the situation.

We have seen great improvement since I have gone DF and SF but the stool still has blood in it.  She does not fuss at feedings (unless she is tired), she does not strain or show discomfort with BM, and what little diaper rash she had is practically non-existent.  I am following the pedi's rec at this point since that is what I am comfortable with.  The allergist has seconded this course too so I feel good about the choice.  I would feel differently if DD was still having all her symptoms.  I do appreciate your point of view but my gut and the doctor's recs make sense to me for her now.
