Registry returns with Amazon?

Does anyone have experience returning items they received through an Amazon registry?

How do they work, was it easy/convenient, did you have to pay return shipping etc?  Could you return something (such as a swing perhaps) that you opened and used and then realized baby hated it?

  • This is from the website. It seems like a ton of stuff to hang onto.

Returning gifts is simple. Visit our Online Returns Center to print out a mailing label, and then mail the package back to Amazon.com. Don't forget to save your packing slip, as it's helpful to have the Order ID handy when you request the mailing label. Once the return is received, you'll be sent a check or an Amazon.com Gift Certificate for the value of your return. (Don't worry--the gift giver won't know the gift was returned!) Please visit our Gift Returns Help pages to get all the details.

  • Doesn't sound too bad.  I'm mostly thinking about a swing and how I've heard folks say their baby either loved it or hated it.  Obviously I'll have to use it before I know whether it's a keeper or not, so I'm worried about being able to return something that's been opened.

Any firsthand experience with Amazon registry returns out there???

I believe, like anywhere else, the item has to be in unused condition if you want to return it.

  • I would say to put a towel or something (waterproof, perhaps) over the swing when you first try it in case of any baby accidents, and keep ALL the packaging. As long as it's in new condition, no stains or damages, you should be okay returning it. As long as their return policy doesn't state "unopened" and the box have tape or something to indicate it has been opened.

  • A heads up with Amazon, if it's not sold directly through Amazon (some items are list on Amazon but sold from 3rd party vendors), you'll have to go through the original merchant to get a refund.  This can be a pain since some don't have very good return policies.

As for return shipping, usually, they'll take it out of your refund or you can pay for it yourself when you mail the package back.  When I've made returns from a gift registry, they've always given me store credit that I can redeem at Amazon.com - never been sent a check.
