Pregnant after IF

Sleeping positions?

I'm having a hard time staying asleep at night because I get so uncomfortable. I haven't bought a pregnancy pillow yet, but I have been sleeping primarily on my left side with a pillow between my legs. I'll occassionally turn to my right side to give my left side a break, but I always end up with the same problem - my hips HURT. It feels like we're doing PIO shots again! Ugh. I've been trying to stay off of my back too.

Does anyone have any suggestions about ways to sleep more comfortably, keeping my hips from being sore, or anything else that would help?

Which pregnancy pillow do you recommend? When did you start using it?

Also, is it alright to sleep on my back if I'm propped up a little?

Thanks!

** Within the last, id say month or so, my hips have begun to hurt. That is actually my main reason for tossing and turning. It sucks. **

Which pregnancy pillow do you recommend? When did you start using it?

**I have the boppy full body pillow. At first it was a lot to get used to as it is kind of big and takes up alot of space in bed. It is worth it though. I cuddle right up with it and fall asleep pretty fast. **

Also, is it alright to sleep on my back if I'm propped up a little?

**I asked my dr pretty early on what she thought about this and she said that your body will know and let you know if you need to move. I was able to sleep on my back for quite a while. Now that my belly is getting much bigger, I cant anymore. I would ask your dr what he/she thinks about it, im sure they will say its ok if it helps you get more sleep**

    Thanks!

  • I didn't end up getting a pregnancy pillow, I just couldn't fathom spending so much on a pillow just because it's a funny shape or has the word pregnancy/maternity in front of it.  I feel like we're wedding shopping all over again with these insane mark-ups over one word!

I rotate all night long from left to back to right to back.  I still sleep on my back.  My OB says you'll know when you can't do that anymore, your body will let you know.  I don't stay in one position long enough to notice any issues.  I just use an extra pillow in between my legs/knees to help out with some of the pain, and sometimes use it as a wedge behind my back when I'm on my side.

That's the best I've come up with.  I think our bed just isn't firm enough to offer me enough support, but there's no way we're getting a new one when we just bought this one last year!  lol

  • I also didnt want to spend an insane amount of money on a pregnancy pillow. I just used a king size pillow to hug so it could support my belly. But that was when I was pretty far along. I also still slept on my back part of the night up until I delievered. I found it was much more comfortable to be on my left side than my right. I think that was because my baby was only on the right side.

I think you just need to experiment with different ways to sleep. I know some women slept better in a recliner or on the couch. The couch may be more comfortable because its firmer so it provides better support. You never know until you try it out. Good luck and I hope you get some good sleep soon!

  • I got a boppy pillow and love it. But I still feel uncomfortable just being on my sides (I was a back sleeper before). I wake up on my back occasionally, but doc said it's ok, and that I will know when I need to turn.

I will say though that even if the pillow doesn't take all the discomfort away, it still makes a difference. I was without it a couple of days when traveling and that was tough.

  • I bought a regular body pillow. It's still a bit much, but I like it! I am a stomach sleeper. I am trying hard to sleep on my sides, but am still partially able to sleep half on my stomach. I doubt for much longer though!

  • i feel your pain sweetie!

i think i bought my PG pillow around 20-22 weeks. i bought the preggle from babies r us - it's basically their generic version of the snoogle, it's made by the same company as the snoogle, and it's less $$$. i *love* my preggle - if we stay over at the IL's, i always bring it with, and it's going to the hospital. i sleep with it between my legs.

you are basically doing everything you can do. the bigger you get (at least for me), you'll find that laying on your back isn't really comfortable b/c the baby will put pressure on your lungs. but i find myself laying on my back for short stints during the night just to give my hips some relief. but for the most part, i'm on my right or left side :(

if the aches are particularly bad one night, i'll pop an extra strength tylenol and that takes the edge off.

    feel better!

  • I'm a terrible sleeper even pre-pregnancy. At 20 weeks, I finally broke down and bought the Snoogle - SO glad I did, it is fabulous and really has made a difference. Now I only wake to go to the bathroom, not because I am uncomfortable.

  • I wish I could tell you the sleeping thing gets better, it hasn't for me. :(  I got a Snoogle pillow on sale, which I really like.  I had always used a regular body pillow before and I found myself rolled over on my back a lot.  The nice thing about the Snoogle is if you use it w/the pillow behind you (ends under your head and between knees) it helps to keep you on your side.  Not sure about the hip thing...  Maybe try getting an extra cushion top for your mattress?  GL!

  • I have been using a regular old body pillow that I got at Kmart for $10. I shove that between my legs. I find that I wake up and roll over to my other side during the night. I seem to rotate back and forth and that helps me to not feel as sore in the morning. We also have a memory foam mattress and I think that helps some as it molds to my body to support it. Maybe you can get just a memory foam topper to see if that helps.
