Pregnant after IF

Good OB appt and neti pot question

I just had my second OB appointment and all is good, except that I lost weight. She is not concerned because my uterus had grown and both the heartbeat and boos flow were good. I was starting to get concerned since everyone seems to have a belly already. So I feel good now.

I do however have a nasty sinus cold. I'll get antibiotics for bacterial infection. But in the meantime and in case is viral tell me about the neti pot. What do you put in it? Just water? Chamomile tea? Does it help?

TIA.

Re: Good OB appt and neti pot question

  • Glad you appointment went well! How are you 16 weeks already?!

I had 2 nasty colds in my first trimester and the neti pot was amazing! You put a saline solution in the pot. the one I got came with little packets that you mixed with warm water. Basically just salt water. It did burn a little bit, but did wonders in clearing out my sinuses.

    Hope you feel better soon!

  • They come with a packet you use. I just use warmish tap water and the solution. I think you even get it in a bigger can.

  • I LOVE my Neti pot. I got a ceramic one from whole foods but it didn't come with a solution. I just make my own with warm water and a little bit of salt. Good luck!

this exactly. i do it everyday, it helps *so* much. the first time you use it you will hate it, b/c it's such a weird feeling. but you will get used to it and it helps!

    feel better!

  • Do NOT use tap water for your neti pot. You should always use sterile bottled water or distiller water when making your preparations - the saline solution a PP suggested is great. Not to fear monger, but the latest amoeba death has been traced to tap water use in his neti pot.

the packets you add to the pot create a saline solution. my ENT told me to use tap water, i trust her.

  • Glad to hear everything is going well.

As for the neti pot, I would not use table salt (it can burn).  When you buy the neti pot there is usually quite a few packets of a salt solution in the box too.  To start out, you can just use 1/2 the packet to the full pot of water.  Make sure you get some distilled water as you don't want to put whatever they put in the tap water into your already inflamed/aggravated sinuses.

  • I'd get the neil med sinus rinse instead.  The neti pot itself is kind of hard to use.  It comes with a powder to make a saline solution.  You can make your own, but i'd jsut use the packets. It's hard to get the PH right otherwise.
  • I'm glad your appt went well today!
