If your water broke, did you need pitocin or did labor start on it's own?

Does anyone know how common it is for contractions and labor to not begin on their own soon after your water breaks (obviously, not AROM)?

I'm just curious.  Would love to hear your experiences.  TIA! :)

ETA: Also, if applicable, how long did you labor at home with broken water?  Or did you head right in to the hospital?

  • My water broke and when  I got to the hospital they said I was having contractions but I couldn't feel them. They started me on pitocin about an hour later.

  • My water broke around 6am. I started feeling contractions around 6:45am and they were about 3 minutes apart. We got to the hospital at 8:30 and they were still 3 min apart. The OB on call started me on pitocin because I was still only 2 cm dilated.

  • My water broke before I was in active labor. Ten hours later I was only 4 cm and they had to start pitocin. All of the nurses and my doctor said to immediately go to the hospital once your water breaks b/c you are on the clock at that point to avoid infection so that is what we did. I'm surprised by how many people don't leave for the hospital quickly once their water has broken...

  • My water broke at 1230am.

By 4am I was on Pitocin.

At 9am I got my epidural.

At 11am, I was found to be fully dilated

    At 1152am DS was born

  • I asked my MW about this at my appt today. She said as long as they get the antibiotics in me for the GBS they aren't worried about starting pit right away since the antibiotics will decrease the risk of infection.

  • My water broke at 11pm and I started feeling contractions at about 11:15. My doctor wanted us to go straight to the hospital since I was GBS+ and he wanted to make sure I got the antibiotics that I needed. No pitocin was needed.

  • Water broke at 9pm.  OB told me to take my time coming in to the hospital because I was GBS- and a FTM.  I had been 2cm dilated & fully effaced for 3.5 weeks before that.

Contractions started at 9:45pm or so at home. They were very painful (couldn't talk through them) but not timeable.

At 11:15pm, lots of lower pelvic pressure and really strong contractions.  Told MH that we should go to the hospital just to get checked because of the pressure, but if I hadn't progressed from 2cm we would come home.

Got to hospital at 11:45pm.  Contractions without a break through the entire car ride.  OB looked at me and said he wanted to check me right away...was 10cm dilated!  Baby born just over an hour later.  Unmedicated, super-fast labor insanity!

  • Mine broke at home and I had intense contractions almost immediately that were 2.5 min apart. We went to the hospital about an hour later. They tried to start me on pitocin (still not really sure why) but I refused it b/c I was already at 4cm and was progressing fine on my own.

  • My mother's water broke and nothing happened for 72 hours at which point she was induced. That was 9 years ago when we weren't so gun-ho about getting things done ASAP. She started on pitocin and it took 23 hours for her to dilate fully.

My sister's water broke and about thirty minutes later, she started getting contractions, an hour and a half later she was pushing.

This exactly. I was disappointed  they had to start pitocin but knew it was best for LO and I. B/c my water broke I wasn't able to walk around which stunk b/c had I been able to I know I would have progressed much faster.

  • My water broke at home at 2am and we headed to the hospital soon after since we live an hour away. Contractions were manageable on the drive there and through admissions. Once I got to the labor room they were much stronger. I didn't need any help with contractions as they started on their own and were very strong and consistent.

  • I had contractions all day and then mine broke when I went to the bathroom right before leaving for the hospital.

  • With LO#1 my water broke at midnight. I didn't want to be induced, so I waited until noon to go to the hospital hoping my contractions would start on their own. They didn't. LO was resting up because he knew it would be a while before he was born. Pitocin was started at 4p and LO#1 was born at 4 in the am.

  • My water broke at 7:45am.  Called my doc who said that I had time to shower but to head to the hospital after that.  Got to the hospital around 9am.  By then I was 6cm, 100%, station 0.  Contractions were going strong by the time we got to the hospital.  We pulled up to  valet and I thought I could walk but ended up needing a wheel chair.  By the time I got my epi, I was screaming in pain.  After that, all was good and progressed to 10cm in about 4hours.  When it was time to push my contractions had slowed to about 6-7min so they started pitocin and then I was contractiong every 2 min or so.  I ended up pushing for 3+ hours but that was mainly because my LO was positioned sideways.
