My mind is seriously blown right now. We are hoping to have a low intervention birth, and I was researching intervention rates at the 2 big hospitals in our city. These hospitals are literally 10 miles away from each other, but are served by very different OB practices.
Episiotomy rate at the hospital where I'm delivering: 7%
Episiotomy rate at the hospital 10 miles away: 49%!!!!!!!!
Can you believe that difference?! It really shows how the "style" of an OB practice can seriously influence the results of an L&D experience.

Re: Episiotomy rates - holy cow!!
That is really insane!
In our Labor class the Teacher was telling us how alot of hospitals in our area of CA strive not to even do them anymore and that the Dr's there all have a running bet of sorts of who can have the most births with no tearing and no episiotomy needed.
That made me LOL
Totally with you Sunny.. Tearing or having an episotomy is my main driver behind my absolute fear of giving birth.... OUCH
My practice (where I work and am a pt) has 1 Dr out of 4 that does them routinely. Of course he delivered DS : ( He cut me all the way to my butthole before I could scream "drop the f-ing scissors" It sucked majorly but he won't be delivering this one, I'm fine with tearing but don't think I needed an epis, DS was only 7-9. I'm sure I'll tear a little because I have some scar tissue now but it's fine.
Everything healed fine and I really can't tell a difference from before. I had an epidural so I didn't feel a thing, it was a weird sensation though, it was like a void where there was previously pressure/sensation.

We found the info using a resource website that's part of our insurance where you can look up statistics about local hospitals. We have Anthem insurance... I'm not sure if maybe other insurance companies provide similar stats?
