Coffee drinkers...current and former

Did you give it up? Why? Or why not? What do you drink to give you that morning boost? I am having SUCH a hard time without it!!! My energy level is soooooo low. Please help and give me your tips!

P.S. We eat a really clean diet and I make most of our meals from scratch. I also work out 5 times a week.

Re: Coffee drinkers...current and former

  • I gave it up during 2ww and first tri, but I had one cup per day after first trimester.  My OB was ok with me having it during the whole pregnancy.  I just made the decision to give it a break for a while.  I found that the habit itself was the hardest to give up.  I had a LOT of vanilla steamers so at least I had that "warm cup in my hands" fix every morning.

My daughter has 10 fingers and toes and is a perfectly happy & healthy baby so I'll do the same for the next one.

  • I went down to only one caffeinated beverage a day a  year ago per my RE;s advice. When I'm pregnant I go down to zero caffeine.  I get headaches when I quit caffeine.

  • I just saw my RE today and one of my issues is my uterine lining.  She advised me to give up ALL caffeine, ALL the time and that this could help my lining.  I did give up caffeine when I was pregnant, except for about 1 soda a week, but I have had more since my m/c.  I'm going to give it up completely.

In my experience the first few weeks w/o caffeine is hard and I get headaches.  I have found that drinking lots of water and getting some exercise first thing in the morning help a lot.  After a couple of weeks it's fine and I generally feel better all around.

  • I give it up in the 2ww and then stay away for a while, but eventually start having a half caff occasionally. I plan to give it up the whole cycle before I TTC next time. Due to my recurrent losses, I don't plan to take any chances. Once I get past my milestones (about 10 weeks) I will probably be okay with an occasional half caff. on another note... can anyone recommend a yummy decaf that is full flavored but not as expensive as Starbucks decaf Verona? : )

This makes a lot of sense. Now that I think about it, my lining was a bit thin at my last u/s too. And I do have a tendency to forget to drink water. I really have to concentrate on it. Coffee just makes it worse. I think I'm going to try the exercise first thing in the morning. I do feel more energized after I work out. I tend to do it in the evening because I wait for DH to get home from work. A nice bike ride in the am will probably help wake me up. Thanks for the advice!

  • I haven't had lining issues but I am trying to cut down on caffeine. I was down to 1 soda in the AM when I was pregnant and then picked up coffee again after DS was born. Hopefully can go back to 1 cup or soda if/when I'm PG again.

  • I drank an occasional cup of coffee or Coke when I was pregnant with DD. I didn't cut it out completely and my Dr said that was fine.

I do drink 1 cup of coffee each morning and like you, would die without it! I really need it to charge me in the morning so I can chase my DD around! I plan on switching to half-caff when we start trying again next month though.

  • I did not give it up this time until I got pregnant. I did give it up when we conceived DD but I didn't intend on TTC for another month so the theory was I had a cycle and a half to cleanse my system. The reason I didn't give up this time until I was pregnant is because I only drank 1 or 2 cupsof in the morning and no soda most of the time so I was within the accepted range for even a pg woman. Now I drink it about once a week for a treat.

I tried - SO hard.  3 times!  I get wicked migraines and caffeine (specifically that in coffee) seems to manage them well.  I almost can't function when I don't have it.  It's a necessary addiction.  Also, I don't like the chemicals in decaf.  HOWEVER, when I was PG with DD, I didn't drink it at all and was fine.  What I did do though is go from 6+ cups a day (yea, I know...) to 1-2 cups a day.  I drink it black, avoiding sugar/sweeteners, and skip milk or use almond milk to avoid dairy.  We also eat pretty healthy, lots of veggies and homemade stuff, low sugar.  I figure if you cause yourself a ton of stress by cutting it out, you're going to produce the cortisol you are trying to avoid in the coffee... SO, if you can keep stress down by allowing yourself a cup or two, you'll "manage" the cortisol (stress hormone said to affect implantation) a lot better.  That's what I tell myself anyway!  GL!
