Sitz bath

Anyone else's hospital send you home with a disposable sitz bath?  When I had my son our hospital did and it was a lifesaver.  I practically lived on that thing!  We've since moved and I have our hospital tour this weekend and I'll ask if they provide one.  If not, I'm definitely ordering one for myself - they have the same one I had before on Amazon for $10 - worth every penny!  Just wondering if anyone else's hospital provides them?

Re: Sitz bath

  • Mine does.  I don't think they are considered re-usable from patient to patient.

  • Mine did and I would imagine that most, if not all, hospitals do send you home with one. I loved it too!

YES!  For me, I was an uncomfortable bloody mess for the first week or 2 and the pressure of sitting on the bottom of the tub would have been horrible for me.  The sitz bath is like your own bidet - blows water up on you and you are sort of suspended so there is no pressure.  I had stitches and it totally creeped me out and this was a good way to keep everything clean.  I could sit there and nurse my child or just rest.  Seems funny now, how much I loved that thing but as I prepare to have this baby, this is on my very short list of "must haves" - rates right up there with Tucks pads!

  • does it go over the toilet or sit in the tub? or is it completely separate? I've seen little jars of stuff called "sitz bath" in the store that looks like bath salts, but didn't realize it was a piece of equipment too

It goes over the toilet.  It's a bowl.  You flip the seats up on the toilet and it sits on the rim of the toilet.  You sit on it.  It has a bag (like an IV bag) that you fill with water and put it up high.  I would hang it from the shower rod and there was tubing that connected to the bowl and the water goes from the bag, down the tubing and into the bowl where it squirts up like a little fountain.  I would fill mine with super hot water and it just made everything feel so much better!  I think the container of stuff you see is something that can go in with the water.  I've never tried it - just used straight water.

  • I <3 THE SITZ BATH!

My first LO was born in a military hosp and they sent me home with one (they normally don't go above and beyond the bare minimum lol) so I have my fingers crossed I will be sent home with one from our new hosp. Good question to ask on the maternity tour though!!

Also, make sure they send you home with the peri bottle. Its so great to have that because I looked at toilet paper those first 2 weeks like sand paper. Ouch!! The bottle is great when you don't have time to sit for a full sitz bath and just need a quick rinse after peeing.

    Good luck!
