Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Solid foods -- need a consensus

So I was waiting until my daughter got her teeth to start on cereals -- I wanted that biological readiness. She cut her first tooth today, but I felt that sucker coming in last week, so we decided to try some rice. She definitely watches us while we eat, so I figured perhaps she was mentally ready too.

She gags. A lot. She gags as soon as she feels the spoon touch her lips. In fact, she almost gags as soon as she sees the spoon coming. I am taking this to mean she's not ready. DH and my parents both say that I have to be more insistent and that she's just not used to it yet.

I suppose it's the gagging in anticipation that makes me think it's more than just "getting used to it." She clearly hates the stuff.

WDYT?

  • You can be insistent and she will eventually get it, or you can wait another month or so and she will get it much more quickly.  I would just put the solids away for a bit and try again in a few weeks.  There is no rush and it's just making you stressed.

  • We've been having similar issues since we started trying at around 4.5 months.  DS2 generally doesn't gag until he tries to swallow the food, but I still don't think hes ready. In your case, since she's so young and has such a violent reaction to the spoon I think you should quit all together for a month or so then try again.  You don't want her to get a negative association with eating.  I've heard of kids who start screaming the second they see their highchair, you def don't want that.

FWIW DS1 ate everything I put in front of him from day 1 of solids at 4mo. and DS2 wants nothing to do with them, and I've done exactly the same things with both of them...some kids are just ready at different times.

  • I would just wait. It's no big deal to start her any time soon. What's the rush?
  • I agree with pp's.  Your LO is probably just not ready.  The general guidelines state that babies are ready once they have good head control, seem interested in food, and have lost the tongue-thrust reflex.  It sounds like your LO still has that reflex.

You might try again in a few weeks and see how it goes.  Or just skip cereal entirely and introduce purees next month or soft solids at 6 months.  I think I'm going to wait until 5.5-6 months and just go straight to purees and soft solids like avocado.  They say that babies are less likely to develop food intolerances/allergies if you wait to introduce solids until they are around 6 months and their systems are more developed.

  • Thanks, ladies. Seems you all agree with what I thought. I need to just trust my mommy instinct and ignore the advice givers!

I love the idea of not starting until 6 months. Done.

  • I'm with everyone else saying she's not ready yet. Teeth aren't a good indicator of biological readiness for solids -- some babies are born with teeth, others don't cut their first teeth until they're a year old. Gums do a good job of chewing once babies are ready to eat.

same here. If you wait awhile, maybe try another food instead of rice?

It could be the rice cereal that's the issue... just something to think about.

DS gobbled up rice cereal, oatmeal, sweet potatoes, pears, bananas, and peas; all without any issues.

I tried feeding him avocado and he gagged. He just doesn't like avocado.

I'd wait a few weeks and the try something other than rice cereal. We moved to oatmeal after trying the rice cereal for a few days. The oatmeal isn't binding him up like the rice did.

  • There's really no reason to start solids before 6 months if they're not showing interest in it.
