Food Allergy

Ugh Confession time!

I've been eating the diet with my hubbs and Asher.  We agreed....no allergens in the house.  Its really difficult and I'm craving all sorts of things.

Now time for the confession:  I cheated and had some Cinn Chex.  It doesn't have any of the allergens in it, but it "May" contain some soy.  So obviously it shouldn't be in the house.

But ladies it tasted like heaven.  I may or may not have liked the cinn off the bowl afterwards.  I know gross.

Re: Ugh Confession time!

  • I would totally do the same!!!

I would go out all the time to get myself a treat.  Every time i run an errand there would be a quick stop at the food store for a quick muffin or something.  I'd become a closet eater.

  • Why are you keeping all allergens out of the house?  Just curious.

DS is obviously allergic to a ton and when he was younger we kept it all--although tended to eat "allergy friendly" meals--but snacks for us were a diff thing.  Now that he's older and can reach more--we keep certain things out--but mainly just keep them out of reach of him.

The reality is that eventually they will be in contact with kids who are eating things they can't have--and now is the time to instill in them that they are allergic and it'll make them sick.  That way hopefully not as much temptation later.

I can see doing things both ways.  My husband and my son have the same allergies so most of our food is allergy friendly anyway.  Asher has very severe reactions so after months of back and forth my hubbs and I decided to eat the same meals as a family and keep allergens out of the house.

I get what you're saying about them coming into contact at some point.  But hes still very young.  As he gets older we'll teach him more about his allergies and what he can and cannot have, but right now everything just goes right into the mouth.  And for me its just not worth another 2 weeks in an ICU cleanroom.  He doesn't go to traditional daycare, he stays with my sister who has an allergy free baby/toy room set up...its huge and they spend almost the whole day int here or outside.

  • I load my salad up with cheese every day in the cafeteria. I was a serious cheese freak (had probably 4-5 different cheeses in the fridge at all times) before DD being diagnosed. It's so freaking good!

  • I went to chik fila in the morning for a bacon and egg biscuit, and I literally had to pull over, it was sooooo good. I of course brushed my teeth and washed my hands before I picked up DS hours later, and made sure the package was immediately thrown away, but I was in food bliss for a few minutes.

OMG---I just realized all that he was allergic too (and thought my son was bad)--but wow!!!  You poor things!  I'm so sorry.  I don't blame you--especially with a hospital stay AND the fact that your hubby has them too.  Ugh.

I totally agree though with allergy free meals--- it's the way to go---it's too hard to cook for two different needs.  It's not easy to cook allergy free but worth it

  • I don't blame you.  My middle DD is allergic to tuna so we weren't keeping it in the house.  I use to eat buy the cans or bags and eat it at work.  Now that she is older and knows not to eat it we keep it in the house.

Once he gets older you just have to teach him that he can not take foods from other people with out your permission.

I'm allergic to milk and so is my oldest DD, as of right now my youngest DD is BF I don't even want to think about ever starting her on milk products.
