Food Allergy

Rice Cereal Allergy?

I gave my son rice cereal for the first time, he is 4.5 months old.  He was ok with it the first and second time, but the third time he had it his face broke out in a rash and he wouldn't go to bed and then woke up twice during the night.  I stopped giving it to him but was wondering if anyone else has had this issue with rice cereal?  My pedi said that it was hypoallergenic.  I used the gerber organic brown rice cereal which has soy in it ( i guess i should have read the label more carefully).

Re: Rice Cereal Allergy?

  • Try earths best rice cereal.  no dairy and no soy. but a bit more pricier i think.

Sounds like a soy issue.  I would watch her carefully and keep a food journal for everything you introduce.  Most reaction never happen on the first introduction. Sounds like soy is the issue.

    good luck.

  • we had lots of cross contaimination issues with baby cereal (wheat issues) and they are usually all made in the same facility/product lines as other things.  I ended up making our own safe baby oatmeal.  It's super easy (just grind up the oats until they're more like a powder).  I know you can make rice cereal too- but I don't remember how...

wholesomebabyfood.com has directions to make your own. I did it for a while and DD liked it just fine, but it is easier to buy it.

  • We are having this issue as well. We used earths best though which doesn't have soy. DD had it for 3 days then had a rash on her face and neck. We stopped for a week and the rash cleared up. We then tried again. After the first feeding she had a rash from head to toe. Her pedi thinks it's just coincidence since rice allergies are rare. I'm not sure what to think. We are giving it a month and trying again. I didn't think about cross contamination issues. I think I'll try making it next time.

  • We had the same issue. Tried several different brands that are supposed to be dairy/soy free: Earth's Best, Beechnut. None of them worked. We just skipped rice cereal all together.

Another option is to wait several more months before introducing solids. Your LO is still so young that their digestive system might not be ready for any solids.
