March 2012 Moms

Are you going to buy a maternity coat?

At first I thought that maternity coats were a bit of a scam, but the more I think about it the more I'm thinking I'll need one. We'll all most likely be pretty large during the very cold months. All of my coats are well fitted and probably won't button when I'm huge. It doesn't get super cold here, but it'll be in the 20s/30s and I stand outside for recess. What are you thinking?

Re: Are you going to buy a maternity coat?

  • Most of my coats are not well fitted so I probably will not unless I need to.  I don't button mine either.  I live in Texas though.  It gets cold but not too bad.  We go outside for recess too...good thought.  I may have to invest in one.

  • Good question... I'm thinking I have a ski jacket from the 90s that is pretty huge.  If I outgrow that I will go thrift store shopping I suppose.

  • I told my husband that was what I was going to ask for as an early Christmas present! Since the EDD is March I also figured I'd be large during the winter months, plus I'm carrying twins so there is no way I'll fit into my normal winter coat. DH said that I can wear his (we're at opposite ends of the size spectrum, me being a M and him being a L/XL) but the way that I see it, if I can get a nice comfy, cute coat, why not? I know I'll want to spoil myself at some point with something new and I'd prefer it to be with something as useful as a warm winter coat :)

  • I'm definitely going to have to.

  • Nope.  I was able to use one of my longer coats last pregnancy just fine and a maternity coat really feels like a waste to me.  Of course it doesn't get as cold here as it does some places.  If I lived somewhere where it got REALLY cold in the winter or the winter were LONG then I probably would get one.

  • I'm in NY, so yeah, I might just have to get one. It gets pretty cold here during the winters and they're pretty long, so I might not have a choice. I'm hoping for a very very mild winter Wink
  • Coat?  What's that?  ;-)

Actually, we'll be in the midwest for two weeks visiting family around Christmas so I'll have to figure out something for then.  Usually we keep coats at our parents' houses for when we visit, but I am thinking I won't be fitting so well into the coats we have out there.

  • I don't think I will be. I have a pretty large wool coat plus some big hoodies.

  • Even though it gets really, really cold here I can usually get away with a good thick sweater, a scarf, and a fleece. I hate winter and I hate wearing a coat. I'm thinking this year I'll feel even hotter and won't need a coat. I guess we'll see!

  • I live in Michigan so yup! I just bought a new fitted winter coat last year, so I'm bummed to not be able to use it. But one of my husband's coats might work out for me.

  • It gets really cold and snowy here and since I'm a sub, I never know if I have recess duty or not. The position I had last year was 6 recess duties. It was awful. I have a LL Bean 3-in-1 coat that my MIL convinced me to buy in a medium. I was annoyed at it last year because it was a bit big. Here's hoping it is big enough to wear.

Although, if I do have to buy one, no big deal. We are planning on more kids after this one so it won't go to waste.

  • I am going to have to get a new winter coat. The only coats I have are fitted wool coats, and they will not fit me for sure. Toronto can get pretty cold from Nov/Dec onwards, so it will be a worthwhile investment.

  • I live in Florida and don't think I have ever buttoned any of my coats, so I think I'll be able to get by with the coats I have.

  • I haven't had to get one with my other pgs. my son was born at the end of Nov. and I was hot all the time, so just never buttoned my coat. With my DD who was born in Jan. I was cold all the time and was able to wear DH coat (its a small/med) and planning on wearing it again. His coat was a little tight, towards the end but it did the job.

  • I have a maternity coat from my 1st pregnancy. I lived in an area where we had cold, long winters and that is also true of where we live now. I have to say that even though we looked pretty carefully, the coat is not very well made or very warm. It was fine 75% of the time but on really cold days, the cold just cut right through my coat. Very annoying!

  • I have a puffy coat that I got last year and I tend to leave it unzipped, so no, I do not think I'll be getting a maternity coat.

now if my feet/ankles get too big for Uggs, I will definitely be getting another pair :)

  • I will most likely be getting one, for a similar reason. It gets pretty cold here in winter and I have recess duty, as well as outdoor dismissal duty.
  • Last time I was due in January, and wanted a coat, but never bought one.  I hit up my fav thrift store once a week and never saw one in my size :-(  I'll keep looking at the thrift store when I get a chance to go (not as often with a toddler), and then I'll probably buy one in Dec if I haven't found one!

  • I think I'll probably have to - with my 3rd tri running from late December - late March I can't imagine what sort of normal coat will fit, and I know I need a super-warm coat for this horrible windy city. All of my coats are XS Petites (not that I am that small, but my shoulders are, and somehow that dictates coat fit?) so I know a 7-9 mo pg belly will not fit.

  • I will probably try to snag one on Black Friday. It doesn't usually get too cold before then, and if it does, I should still be able to get by with my old coat at that point. It's pretty cold here Dec-Feb so I don't see how I can avoid getting one.

  • Yeah, the last 2 winters here have been pretty bad, and I'm in school 4 days a week walking all over campus, so I will definitely need to find one.

  •  I think I am going to buy one, as it gets cold in the winters here.  I want to see if I can find one at a consignment shop first.  My MIL also suggested getting a heavy cape even, since they are coming back in style.  We'll see what I can find come November!

  • MH already told me I can wear his super warm XL North Face jacket.  It should fit the whole way through.  If somehow that just doesn't work out, then I'll buy one.  I LOVE coats, but would feel bad buying one I can only wear a few months!

  • I'm a Cali girl, so it's not going to get much below 40, but I hate being cold! I figured I can layer and wear the hubby's coat only for so long. I just ordered this:

    https://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=70585&vid=1&pid=855744&scid=855744002

I would at least get a snuggly sweater!

I'm with you! I've pretty much never owned a coat living in So Cal, so I probably won't be purchasing a maternity one!

  • I am dreading this!  I have to buy a winter coat as mine is very fitted and I have to trudge around a downtown area in the winter with snow up to my ankles (because no one shovels in our fair city.)  I was thinking of trying Burlington.  I have to get a dress coat that would go with a business suit for professional wear.  Barg!  I saw a couple of cute ones online that had ties around the middle so you could expand it, etc.  But then I wonder how warm that is actually going to keep me or if the front of me is just going to be pummeled by the wind.
