s/o to what age do they - sunken living room

At what age can I expect them to safely be able to navigate into and out of our sunken living room?

Right now we have three supergates surrounding it and it looks and feels so cluttered.  Also the super gates move around as we don't have them attached to the walls.  I'm debating whether to attach them or not.  I don't want to damage the walls but if this is going to be needed for a long time we have to as they pull up on the gates and they move around.

  • Ours could easily handle going up stairs out of a sunken living room now but going down would be another story. They are great crawling up steps but just dive off of things head first.

  • Start early with teaching them to safely get down the stairs.  I read a great tip here once that said it's far easier to teach your kids to get down off furniture safely than it is to try and keep them off it.

Work on always going down the stair backwards and don't tolerate any leaping.  (It's still very much a work in progress at our house, but I think we're moving in the right direction.)

  • I started teaching mine the words "Go down on your belly" as soon as they started to attempt stairs, level changes, etc.  I said it a lot and they grasped it pretty quickly. It really reduced the number of falls and made them more aware of how to maneuver level changes. For a long time would even crawl backwards off of gym mats and at big cracks in the sidewalk. They would have been able to handle a sunken living room at about 11 months but my girls are pretty cautious when it came to crawling/walking. If your LOs are more fearless then it may be longer.
  • We started teaching DS1 around 1 year.  We never "taught" the twins, they just "got" it around 1 year.
  • Our house is a 1974 ranch with a sunken living room.  There is only one step down into it.  We taught them to go down the stair on their belly, foot first when they were about 10 months old.  Luckily we have another place in the house with padded stair which was a perfect teaching stop.   It took about an hour to practice and teaching, but they caught on.

That's funny-- our phrase is "squiggle down on your belly." :)
