Max's 2nd is coming up and I want to get him a "bike". I'm debating on the Radio Flyer tricycle, or a Big Wheel. I'm leaning toward the Big wheel only because I think it's cooler, lol. Thoughts? (he can't quite reach the pedals yet on the tricycle, but the Big Wheel has an adjustable seat).
He's already getting a police car cozy coupe. Is this ride on toy overkill? Should I go in another direction and buy him something else? Oh, he's getting an easle too.
Re: Big Wheel or Tricycle?
We just got Mia a Kettler tricycle we scored off of Craigslist.
It's awesome, and she loves it. She can't touch the pedals yet, either, but it has a detachable push handle.
We have a Radio Flyer big wheel, and that actually takes longer for my boys to be able to reach the pedals than their tricycle did (even with the seat in the closest position). Ethan is in the 95% for height and will be 3 next month, and still cannot pedal the Big Wheel because he can't reach. He does great on the trike though. Jack is 4.5, about 90% for height and can just now pedal the Big Wheel.
So I vote tricycle for a 2 year old, he'll learn to pedal this year! The boys also really love the plasma car that Amanda mentioned.
I also vote for the tricycle first. We have a kettler and love it.
We have both and now that Alec is surpassed the trike, he would rather ride his big wheels over his bike--which is a pain in the butt for us. We want him riding the bike:)
Get the tricycle with the removable push handle.
I bought both Carter and Ava Big Wheels for Xmas last year. Ava was 3 years and Carter was 4.5. It was too way big for Ava and slightly too big for Carter with the seats pushed all the way up. He rides her pink one b/c it's smaller and a better fit for him unti lhe gets bigger. Ava doesn't care, b/c she can't ride it anyway.
ditto kerrin, get the tricycle with the removable push handle, you're going to need it, even after he can reach the pedals, he will get tired and you're going to be stuck trying to figure out how to get the damn tricycle, and your tired toddler, back to your house.
Also, I'd go with the kettler by the way versus the radio flyer, especially if you're planning on having more children. We got the radio flyer tricycle and that thing is a piece of crap. Small minor things broke on it within 6 months and finally this summer the frame literally broke. I'm not saying Riley had anything to do with that or not but.....lol! but now we're looking to buy a kettler since we've got one more kiddo who is gonna need some wheels.
so the second kid gets the hand me downs and the third kid gets all new stuff again.
Oh yes I agree with getting a Kettler with a push bar!! It's removable too. And Heather, I was just thinking about that the other day, of course in our case it's more because Lauren is a different gender as well (especially in regards to clothes), but Jack and Lauren get all new stuff and poor Ethan gets ALL hand-me-downs. Poor middle child, I'm so glad he has the sweet, upbeat personality to counteract birth position
