2 Mo Shots PSA

Today DD had her shots.  I ran out late last night because I realized I didn't have any infant Tylenol in the house and I'm so glad I did.

Naturally during the shots she freaked out but I was able to nurse and calm her afterwards.  She fell asleep for awhile when we got home and when she woke up she didn't feel well.  I didn't know it at first but when she was crying while nursing (my girl loves to eat) I knew something was wrong.  I finally pulled her off after almost an hour because she felt hot.  She was crying off and on while nursing and when I made her stop to take her temp she screamed and screamed.  It was terrible.  Her temp was only 99 but I decided to give her Tylenol anyway b/c it was obvious she didn't feel well.

The Dr had also suggested a bath might help because their legs sometimes hurt.  I tried it and she hated it.  Ugh.  It was a long 45 min for the Tylenol to kick in (I nursed her until she fell asleep) but when it did she was back to being my smiley girl.

Moral of the story: Have Tylenol on hand before the shots!!!

I don't know what I would have done.  I spent 2 hours today with a screaming baby that didn't feel well.  The only thing that worked was Tylenol!

My pedi advised me to give half a dosage (.4) BEFORE her shots. She cried during them, calmed within minutes just from eing held and napped for 2 hours after. No more crying and no fever. Good luck!

Good luck!  Hopefully you won't need it!

  • Our's are Tuesday. DH is taking him, and our ped also said to do Tylenol 30 min before the appt and do a bath that night.

  • Are they affected because of the number of shots?  Or could just one shot cause them to not feel well?  N is only getting one shot on Friday so I'm not sure if the Tylenol is necessary.

  • We didn't use tylenol at all b/c LO didn't seem in pain or feverish.  He was mostly sleepy.  Later that night he started to seem slightly restless/fussy so we did a shared bath and he looooved it.  He went from a scowly face to a smooth and happy face.  We did the shared bath instead of using his baby tub so he could be immersed all the way up to his shoulders.  I held one hand behind his neck/head and put my other hand under his little bum and swayed him side to side in the water.  He was so relaxed.  It was super cute.

I have no idea I just know I would have been lost if I didn't have some on hand yesterday.  Hopefully it won't affect most everyone's babies like it did mine but if so I would want to have some just in case :)

  • Thanks for the heads up we have our shots Monday morning. I am not looking forward to hearing my little girl scream her head off.

  • Emma did great for her shots, screamed only until I picked her up. I fed her then she fell asleep on the ride home and slept 5 more hours. She seemed a little uncomfortable when she woke up so I gave her some Tylenol and she was back to sleep very quickly.

Gym - you might want some on hand just in case. They stick the needle pretty deep into the muscle and I imagine just one alone can be pretty painful. And if you get lucky and don't need it, you'll still have it on hand should N ever develop a fever or something.

Please be aware that many pedi's advise to not give ANYTHING before the shots as they may make the shots less effective.  So many bumpies advised me of this last week when we went for mine.  And please check that many Tylenols have been recalled.
