freaking out about incompetent cervix?!

ok so today my mom told me that my sister had an incompetent cervix during her pregnancies, she lost her first child and with her other two she had to have a cerclage put in her cervix and she carried them full term. i dont know of any one else in my family that had this problem but i'm definitely worried about it. i havent told my doctor yet but i'm going to call the nurse tomorrow to let her know. anyone else have this problem and does any one know if it is genetic i've heard that it is.

Re: freaking out about incompetent cervix?!

  • From all that I have heard, the causes of IC are unknown. My SIL was diagnosed with IC early on in her pregnancy. She was put on full bed rest at 25 weeks for cervical shortening and her water broke at 30 weeks. They were able to keep LO in utero for 2 more weeks, and they were able to administer steroid shots to help speed up his lung development. He was born just under 8 weeks premature and was released only after one month in the NICU. He is now the strongest, healthiest little guy.

My SIL has two sisters, and she is the only one with IC. Don't worry about this until you have to/if you have to. GL and H&H 9 months to you!

  • During my first pregnancy they told me I had a short cervix, I had a pessary put in. I don't know if it runs in the family or not.  I, however, ended up being 8 days late and having to be induced. I pictured as soon as they took it out my water would break, but that wasn't the situation for me.

  • Just because she had it doesn't mean you will.  My mom did have one with my little brother but it was only because she was 42 and had a weak cervix due to her age and have 3 other pregnancies (when she had us in her 20's).  I had an IC when I was 20 (1st pg) and delivered at 21 weeks (water broke), baby did not survive.  For future pregnancies I had a preventative cerclage around13-15 weeks and delivered DD at 40 weeks and DS at 40weeks 5 days (about 3-4 weeks after the cerclage was removed)...my cervix always had a nice long length...and like I said I held the babies in even after the cerclage was removed.  I think the 1st IC was a fluke, but it was better to be safe than sorry.  Your doctor will check your cervix if you feel concerned or refer you to a high risk dr.  You should be fine.  Relax and enjoy the pregnancy, don't stress :)

  • My mom had an incompetent cervix. She lost two babies between my older sister and me, and my sister was 6 weeks premature. She had to have a cerclage for me and for my younger brother. I told my OB about it, and she said that while it may or may not be genetic, she'll measure my cervix at 16 weeks. If it looks problematic, then I'll have a cerclage. My OB didn't seem particularly concerned about it, and I believe it's fairly easy for them to check for it at 14-16 weeks.
