Daycare Providers

My DH and I are starting to interview a few daycare providers (we still havent decided whether we want to do a daycare or nanny as we only need PT care)

What questions did you/ do you plan to ask potential providers? (Here's my list but I'm sure I'm missing some)

How many kids do you care for at a time?

What is the daily schedule like?

What is your policy on sick children (ie: do you allow kids with a fever to come to day care, coughs/runny noses, do you administer tylenol ect?)

What is your policy on notifying parents of vacation/sick time?

Which days do you traditionally take off (ie: a week for xmas, day after thanksgiving, new years eve, good friday ect)

If you have PT help, are they also CPR/First Aid certified?

Re: Daycare Providers

  • I found most of it is contained in a handbook. Just observing their operations was critical. Some looked good on paper but the teachers seemed horrible.I looked for the food options, if the teachers seemed overwhelmed, what activities were they doing, etc.

I went looking in Feb so I need to see how I fair on the waiting list.

  • We're calling to set up some times to meet with in home daycare providers next week so I'm glad to see this question posted! I've been meaning to come up with a list of questions and haven't done so yet. I know one thing that I'm going to ask that is important to me is flexibility on hours. My job can sometimes keep me later than expected and some places charge if you come after a certain time.

  • If you are looking at home day care providers, I would ask them the following as well:

What is your policy on taking the children out of the house? (eg: is she going to put the kids in her car and run errands during the day?)

What do you do if you are sick/family emergency?  Do you have backup or am I responsible for finding my children care for that day?  Do you charge us for the day if you are unable to provide service.

When do you take vacation?  How long in advance do you let us know of your vacation time so we can plan accordingly?  Are they generally during school vacation weeks?  Do we get charged for the weeks you are on vacation?

These are just some I thought of that don't pertain to centers but do to in home.
