Dad's buying/picking out things for baby?

I'm not trying to start anything, just curious how the roles play out for you.  My mom was always the one to take us shopping for clothes, buy Christmas gifts/birthday gifts, etc.  When they got divorced my dad had a hard time learning to buy gifts and still delivers them in the plastic bag from the store many times.....  DH is not a gift buyer or a planner either....and dont get me wrong I love to shop, but it would mean so much if he would buy something/pick something out to give his daughter.

Re: Dad's buying/picking out things for baby?

  • I've had to tell DH to stop buying clothes for LO. He's a HUGE SF Giants fan so we've got tons of stuff. He also is a shoe freak and bought LO some Nike booties that look like Jordans. He takes DD out sometimes and she comes home with toys and shoes and stuff. DH is pretty good about it.

My dad sucked at buying us stuff as well. So he just never did. Instead he asks us to buy ourselves what we want and what his grandkids want and then pays us back for them. It's lame.

  • Aww, I felt this way too UNTIL he ordered a bunch of random crap from Think Geek for the baby - onesies, bibs, LED pacifier, etc.  He's not into cutesy, but give him techy or nerdy and he's all about it.  I take it where I can get it.  Thoughtfulness comes in all shapes and sizes :)

  • My husband has purchased a stuffed cow (it's ridiculous cute) and a USC onesie... that's it. I kind of like that he hasn't purchased very much, because he thinks EVERYTHING is cute, and I'm a bit more discriminating.

  • DH has probably wanted to buy more than I have. He's a huge sports nut so and I'm trying to limit the number of sports related things he's getting for baby. I think it's so cute how excited he is for his son. He was really into the registry when we went. I was kicking myself after awhile for letting him be in charge of the scan gun. I had to go behind him and delete things b/c he was scanning things when I wasn't looking!

My dad was a truck driver when I was little and always used to come back with little gifts for me. He may not always pick out the greatest things...he's got awful taste, but he tries hard!

  • When my BF bought his last video game I was teasing him about how many things he could have bought his daughter with that money. The next day he came home with 4 adorable outfits for her :)

  • I was having the same problem, so I got sneaky. I brought him into Babies R Us and said, "I just want to look for this one plaid shirt really quick. Can you help me, so it doesn't take as long? Please?" (I think he was impressed that I was doing some time managing.) He came back a few minutes later with a GIANT smile on his face holding up this pj set. With him it worked because once he started looking, he had to actually look and picked up something he liked. We never found the plaid shirt. But that's because it only came in toddler sizes :)
  • My DH is like that too. He isn't the best gift buyer. He always leaves it to me to pick things out. I finally got him more into picking out DS clothes. I felt like he was being left out on what to buy him. With this one he is starting to actually pick things. I love seeing what he likes for the kids.

  • My DH hasn't picked anything, but I didn't really expect him to. He has told me that he wants our baby girl to look like a girl though, and I know that if only I would let him he would buy every baby broncos thing in existence.

DH LOVES Think Geek.  He got his diaper bag from there, the "Bag of Holding."
We also got the LED pacifier, the Zombie Snack bib and the DNA sequence onsie.  LOL.  I feel ya...

  • My FI hasn't bought anything, but he does look at stuff online all the time that he wants our LO to have. I have a feeling that once LO is here he will start buying like crazy because he is a HUGE Oregon Ducks fan and he'll want our LO to be completely decked out in that kinda stuff...
  • I was feeling this way too! Until randomly the other day my hubby came home with 3 onesies, and one of them said "Daddy's little Buddy!" So cute. I went back and got the matching little pants.

  • DH will bring home clothes for DS if he is out and about and he finds something he likes...I like that he does it! In fact, I had to ask him why there was a fuzzy green rug in our garage last night? He bought it for DD's room :) Yea!
