Day care and Vaccines ? (and a little vent)

I just recieved a voicemail from Eloise's daycare teacher (whom also is a close friend) and she said Eloise cannot come to school  until I am able to provide proof that she had her final HepB vaccine.  We did a modified shot schedule with Weezy and somehow the final HepB got missed at her 2 year appointment in March.  Neither of us realized this until 2 weeks ago, at which point I called and made her an appointment for next Wednesday (which was the first appointment availiable that worked with our schedule as we are going out of town).  Now her teacher has decided to draw a line in the sand and say Weezy cannot come to school on Tuesday?  She has been late for 6 months, one more day is going to hurt? What about parents who choose not to vaccinate their kids?  Are they ineligible for daycare?

I get that she owns the business and she gets to make the rules but I am more than a little pissed by the unprofessional way she has handled this (not even realizing we are out of compliance for 6 months and then leaving a snide voicemail with no notice?!)   Not to mention our personal relationship; she is a single mom and my DH and I have been extremely supportive of her and her son.  I don't expect special treatment for Eloise, but I think a bit more notice would have been appropriate.  She is my good friend and she knows how much it takes to get Weezy and a newborn out of the house and to the doctors at a certain time.  Maybe I shouldn't but I totally have hurt feelings over the way she has handled this.  I guess this is what I get for mixing business and pleasure.  :(

  • I'd call her back and ask her for the vaccine waiver form and say you're not doing any additional vaccine's.  Sure I get that she's out of compliance but you do have the option of simply signing a piece of paper to opt out of the vaccine requirements.  Even if you didn't have more of a personal relationship, and frankly I think that if your provider is any good at all you are going to do so, it would be reasonable to be hurt by the way it was handled.

  • I agree that it wasn't handled in the best way. Not sure what the state laws are about this, but I do know that every daycare center/preschool has been very strict about immunization. Maddy can't go to this back up place until we have a medical sign-off... well that is taking forever so I called asking what should I do, and the preschool told me the critical part is immunizations. If they don't have a copy of immunizations they can't let her in.

Different, but maybe she's being held to a standard that's out of her control. None the less... frustrating.

  • I'd be upset too if the message was snide.  That sucks.  It could have been left in a caring, compassionate way while respecting all of you (her need to meet some rule potentially, your difficulty in getting her to the Dr's, delayed schedule, etc).

  • Wow, especially knowing how close you two are I am surprised the she handled this.  Obviously since M doesn't go to daycare I know very little but I am sure there is a quick way you can say you are opting out and then when you bring her after her shots it won't matter.

  • Not only was that handled totally inappropriately, unless the kids are having sex or bleeding all over each other, they are not going to spread any Hep B. Most likely. I mean if it was pertussis or measles maybe I could see giving you a deadline but certainly not denying access to daycare for one day until you get the shot. Ridiculous. And for Hep B especially.
