Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

What is your LO's current language dev?

I know this varies tremendously, just thought I would see where your LO's where at with their language development.

What/how many words are they using and how many are they putting together etc?

DD has several words that we can understand, but probably just a few that a complete stranger would understand. She carries on conversations all day long with babble and seems like she is really going to start talking any day now!

Re: What is your LO's current language dev?

  • She can say Mama, Dada, What's that? ("was da?!?"), I git, down... so that's 5 things.

She also knows what a duck and a cow say. Sometimes lion and monkey noises.

  • mama, dada, march (Ba)

we get "bye bye" (ba, ba) and "go" every once in a while (not often at all).

sometimes he may repeat -- like when he gives me something I say "thank you" he says "da, doo"... LOL

  • DS is 17 months old and he says, mama, dada, yea and ut-oh all the time, and then he can say a,e,i,o,u. aub (for his aunt aubrey), ni-ni (night night), hi, up, tank u (thank you) ha (hot) ee (eat).  o and s**t (sit).  but most of them he won't say unless he wants to on his own and grandma is maaa
  • Tooter has mastered "Whats that?", "car", "hey", "ball", "bye bye".

Our pedi has expressed her concern for his language development (or non-development for that matter).. but I'm not exactly sure how I'm supposed to "force" the words on him... :-/

  • My daughter is almost 21 months and talks a lot. I have no idea how many words she says - 100-150? She's started to string words together into simple sentences, like Daddy's working, Puppy's sleeping, I see you, Color on paper... that kind of thing. I think her language development really started to explode around 16 months. She started picking up new words on what seemed like a daily basis. Before that she maybe had 10 words.

  • My LO is almost 18m.  He says a lot of half words (the first syllable), mama, dada, all done, go, etc.  We had some speech concerns with DS1, and we were constantly reassured that at this age, the understanding of language was much more crucial at this age.  My LO also does lots of non-verbal responding with gestures, noises, and actions.  And he babbles a LOT!  It's especially cute when he "reads" books to himself.

  • DD is almost 13 months and she doesn't say any words.  She will try to copy the sounds sometimes if you say them to her, but she never says any on her own.  She understands words and will point or bring things that you ask, or sometimes follow directions.
  • Just recently his language has exploded...I would say he has 80-100 words though I stopped counting after 40ish. He puts a few together like "here you go", "hi (mama, dada, papa, etc)", "so and so all gone" but otherwise just says single words. He is always talking or babbling.

  • DS is 13 months and probably has somewhere near 50 words.  The only two word phrase he's ever used was "cold coffee", but he was just repeating me.

  • My DD is 13 months old and has quite a few words.  She says mama, dada, nonna (my mom), dog, buh bye, thank you, good girl, big girl, baby, up, hey, mine, book, ball, and hello.

ETA: forgot she also does uh-oh, duck (sounds like ***), bird, and cat.

  • I guess language development is okay to discuss during the day lol :) I figured when I'd open this it would be horrible.

DS says a lot. He's a chatter box. I'm not sure how many words but I'm sure its over 75.

  • DS is 20 1/2 months and says about 125 words and 3 word sentences often ("I go bye-bye" "Doggie go outside", etc).  He had a huge word explosion a couple months back and some days learns 2-3 new words a day.  It's so fun to watch!

I wouldnt' admit to counting over 100 words because according to Dreamsicle and several other bumpies, that makes you a douche...

  • I stopped counting DS's words, but it's over 50. He's started to put things together "My Mama" "Daddy Stop" "Daddy/Mama let's go"
  • My son knows about 40 words. He repeats just about everything you say to him. He isn't putting phrases together except 'all gone'. He is amazing at following directions as well. It is very neat to see the new changes each daySmile

  • I haven't actually counted, but DS (he's 20m) says anywhere from 75-100 single words, and has been using a lot of 2 word phrases. He now says "i want eat chicky" "want more juice, mommy" and a couple of other longer phrases, but just started that earlier this week...kinda freaked me out.
