Hi ladies
I have a question, first of all my 3 past pregnancy very past !!! all my sons were all late on their due dates and I had no Epidurals . crazy it was painful but I handle it. many times i felt like giving up....
My doc is thinking of just inducing me on my due date, instead of waiting as my kiddos were all late. because of my age 43 and thinks why wait, I heard that when you are induced that the contractions are much more painful then when you are not induced , and baby comes on its own, Is this true and I also heard that if your baby is not ready, you can end up haveing a long time laboring and sometimes it ends in a C-section. my first child was born 8 hrs from the minute I walked into the hospital, my second 1 hr crazy thought i would have the kid in the car...and the third was 4 hrs,, doc says all women are different, but I would like to hear it from moms out there , Is it true contractions are a lot more stronger when induced and what was your experience on being induced I dont think i handle stronger contractions then the ones i handle years and years ago...and a longer labor
thanks
Re: To all moms that were Induced QUESTION ??
I don't know about the contractions vs natural contractions, but I endured a 4 day induction only to end up with a c-section. It was a horrible experience only to end up with major surgery. I will absolutely refuse an induction this time around.
That being said, my experience is rare. You could be like Peppernut and have your baby with just a dab of Cervadril and no epidural.
Good luck whatever you choose.
I've only had the one baby, so I can't compare contraction pain. I was induced due to hypertension. Nine days early, zilch dilation/effacement. So a different experience from many. It took about 11 hours, although only about 8 from the first contraction. No c-section.
I did go for the epidural because they thought I had at least four hours left and I was exhausted (they started at 5:30pm so I'd been up a long time) and thus afraid I'd be too tired to push enough and then get the c-section, so I had the epidural and delivered 90 minutes later.
They gave me pitocin. No cervadril. And I had to skip most of the coping mechanisms. Because of the blood pressure, I was confined to the bed the entire time. That really slowed things down of course. I expect I would have handled the pain better if I'd been able to walk, use the tub, etc.
Hmmm... I have nothing to compare my contractions to when I was induced since that was my first time giving birth. Yes, it was very painful, but I did deal with them without an epidural...although how much longer I could've gone I don't know. After 36 hours and baby's heartrate going down and no progression, they took me in for a c-section. I really wanted to avoid induction, but as I was 41.5 weeks and had no sign of going into labor on my own - plus, the amniotic fluid was low - the decision was made for me. I definitely hope to avoid induction with this pregnancy.
My SIL who is also AMA was induced and delivered her baby vaginally within 12 hours. It depends on the person...and, unfortunately, I don't think there really is a way to tell how you're going to respond. Good luck!
Yeah, I was lucky and just needed cervidil, and my contractions were intense because it was fast, not because of any medication. I think even if your boys were late, wait and see what your body's doing as you get closer. I've heard doctors usually wait for certain indicators that an induction would work before just doing it.
Good luck!
Thanks Ladies,
I'm just going to wait and hope for the best. If she comes on time , i would be surprise . I will keep you posted
For induction, my doctor starts with Cervidil the night before. That ripens your cervix. If it works and contractions start on their own, I don't think the rest of your labor will be any different than before. If it doesn't, then they will usually start Pitocin. My understanding is that contractions while on Pitocin are more intense than non-medicated contractions.
Just because your body is contracting, doesn't mean that it is making meaningful progress towards delivery. So yes, it is possible that you could go through an induction and labor for a very long time and it still not work and you require a c-section. But for a lot of women, the combination of Cervidil and Pitocin work.
I would ask your doctor about your Bishop's Score, which can give an indication as to how likely it is that induction will work for you.
My water broke, but I had no contractions. I was started on pitocin about 16 hrs later. The contractions were intense, but then again it was my 1st baby, so I had nothing to compare to. LO#1 was born vaginally 12 hrs after I was induced. I opted for no other med interventions, had DH and my doula for support and did just fine.
I got internally checked at 37 wks to find that I was 1cm dilated and about 80% effaced. I think the more effaced you are, the more likely the pitocin will work for you. GL
I am on my seventh pregnancy and I can agree with the pp. My first baby was induced (turned out he had a knot in his cord and was lucky to survive!) and took 36 hrs and ended with a huge episiotomy (sp?) and forceps. Luckily the Dr. barely left a mark on my little guy's head and all was well but labor number two was natural and I would have taken that 5 times over labor number one. I have had two more natural and two more induced... hands down, natural wins!
I personally have had 3 different labors. 1st was with EPI very little contractions. 2nd was induced 1wk late with pitocin. 3rd was natural.
The pitocin contractions hurt way worse than giving birth naturally. The doctors are talking about inducing me with #4 prior to my due date because of Graves Disease but I told them I do not want pitocin unless medically necessary. They told me they would try natural techniques first like sweeping membranes and breaking my water prior to anything synthetic.
I would rather have another non medicated birth without an EPI than ever go through the synthetic contractions that I experienced with #2. Keep in mind that you cannot get an EPI with pitocin until you are so many centimeters dialated but once I got the EPI I was fine.
Well, I think "induction" can mean several things. With #1, Dr had an approach where one you were at 3 or 4 cm, she sent you to L&D, not home. On the morning of my 38 week apt, I was 4 CM, so off I went. She broke my water and gave me pitocine since I was feeling any contractions (although clearly I was having them). From the time the pitocine started to delivery - 5 hours.
#2....doctor "stripped" my membranes at 37 weeks. I was already 3 CM. Said it's a 50/50 chance you "go into labor". 24 hours later, my water broke. I got to the hospital around 6 PM, delivered just after midnight. Again, was given some pitocine since I wasn't feeling the contractions. I should add...I pushed 1 time, yes 1 time, and he was out.
