What are you NOT looking foreword to..

at your shower? I was just thinking about how much I hate opening gifts in front of people. It always shows on my face how I really feel. So, I always have to force this obviously fake smile on my face when I don't like a gift (example: HIDEOUS towels DH cousin got us as a wedding gift lol). I hate to be rude and really do appreciate everything I get..sometimes my initial reaction just does not look that way lol.

Re: What are you NOT looking foreword to..

  • I dunno I'm fine with the embarrassment of it all.  I realized after my bridal shower that it's not so bad.  Just remember how much fun everyone else is having!

I am a little worried about getting too many opinions from my relatives that'll be in attendance.  They're all very traditional and I'm afraid when they find out about my home birth plans they may freak.  Then again, they may not.  Staying positive is my new thing.

  • Should I have one I can only say that I don't really like being a center of attention and don't like when all eyes are on me. I always feels so awkward... lol

  • I'm not a huge fan of showers of any kind...it's like pulling teeth to get me to show up to one. I'm the girl who orders a gift online and has it sent to the guest of honor.

But I'm really not looking forward to some of the ridiculous games. Who Knows Mommy Best and stuff like that are fine, but heaven help them if toilet paper is involved in ANYTHING.

  • Same here!  I hate being the center of attention at parties (hence why I don't have bday parties lol).  And I am just like you, if I hate something it definitely shows on my face.  The only parts of the shower I am looking forward to is cake and not having to pay for the gifts I get.

  • You mean besides everything (I hate showers)... I am most dreading the gift opening and the pictures. I'm not an "oooooh aaahh-er" over baby stuff and after Dh's daughter sent us some pictures of her baby shower I realized there is no way in hell I am going to be cool with anyone taking pictures of me at 8 months pregnant unless they are a professional, there is makeup, dim lighting, and airbrushing involved. NO freaking way.

  • The attention....blah I hate being the center of attention.  I didn't like it at my bridal showers and I am sure I will feel the same for my baby shower.

  • Attention doesn't bother me one way or the other. I feel like I'm having a shower for my mom, MIL, and sister more than me and baby.

I am NOT looking forward to my grandmother. Just the thought of her make me stressed. She is the most negative person I know and will be sure to make plenty of negative comments about my size, the food, what I register for, etc. There is no pleasing this woman, even when the day isn't about her.

I'm not looking forward to the plethora of gifts that are NOT on my registry.  At my bridal shower I got skanky zebra print lingerie for my KITCHEN shower from my SIL.  Not amused.

Also I when people touch my belly.  And it's going to be pretty much inevitable at a shower.  Do they make maternity pants that shock people when they touch you?  If so I'm totally down.

This too! If they include a gift receipt I can at least return it for something I want..but of course at my bridal shower there wasn't a gift receipt included with those things

  • Luckily, my sister and BFF are throwing DH and I a co-ed shower... So, no silly games, and no present opening! I realize that this is somewhat non-traditional, but it's more "us".

I think that may be our only shower, and that's just fine with me! ;)

One related question... if most relatives and close friends live far away (and we're pretty sure they won't be able to make it), is it still a good idea to send an invite? My sis and BFF want to invite EVERYONE, and I wasn't exactly sure about the etiquette of this...

  • I hate that I have to stick to my oldest sister's schedule. I have to do this at this time and we open gifts at this time and we need to be done with them by this time and you need to talk to so and so when we're done....and on and on. I didn't get to eat at my bridal shower until most of the guest left and I wouldn't have gotten to then if my Aunts wouldn't have fixed me a plate and had me sit with them.

Hopefully with DH there, it won't be as bad. Someone to share the duties with.

I'm not really sure about the etiquette of it, but I am planning on sending invitations to family that I know wont be able to make it because if they don't get an invitation they will be upset with me, so maybe it just depends on how you think your family/friends would react to not getting one.

  • I am not really looking forward to the games.  I told my mom and sister that I refuse to participate in any game where they either guess how big my stomach is or how much I weigh.  Not gonna happen.

This.  We're having a party instead of a shower.  We are doing presents but I'll enjoy opening the presents with DH by my side.  And we won't be playing any games so all the stuff I was dreading won't be there.

    This.

We had no games at my bridal shower and it was perfect.  I could maybe handle one of two at the baby shower but I would be over the moon if my freinds skiped that tradition.

My SIL warned me that her family nagged and nagged her to register and then didn't buy anything off of it.  Great.

I would definitely buy those maternity pants!  Or at least register for them?  Think people would get the hint then?

  • I'm just really not looking forward to people asking "Are you sure you're ready to be a mom?" I mean I know am going to be 21 and shortly after LO arrives 22 but so far things have come natural to me and I am expecting it to continue to be this way.  I am making my own decision about breast feeding, pacifiers, diapers and so on without the help of anyone's advice or crazy opinions (except my FI of course) so YES I think I am ready to be a mother.  I am not "16 and pregnant", I am 21! Ahhhh.

We did pretty much the same thing. We had a big coed party with cocktails (and mocktails).  It was less like a shower and more like a party.

Since I HATE opening presents in front of people, my SIL sent out invitations that said we were "going green" and NOT to wrap any presents. When people arrived they affixed a tag to their gift so that I knew who it was from.  My mom and sisters then arranged them around the room as part of the decorations - clothes got hung up on a clothes line and bigger items were on tables around the room.  It was great not to have to open presents!!

  • Good advice! Thank you!!
  • At my wedding shower my Mom took a picture of me opening every gift.  I loved the gifts I received but the pictures were not flattering and I didn't get any of them printed. Not looking forward to more of those pictures...
