Food Allergy

very frustrated with daycare

So my son has an egg allergy, not severe as long as it isn't egg directly. Daycare won't feed him anything with egg and I understand their point of view about not taking chances. But my gripe is that they change the menu to an egg item with notice it really get to me. Yesterday I got a call that my son bit another kid after trying to steal other kids plates of mac and cheese (on of his favorite meals).... to top it off he was only offered bread, green beans and melon for lunch.... I think he bit because he was so hungry. I know that things can change unexpectedly, but can't they change it to a meal that all the kids with allergies can eat. If it is a food item they aren't sure they just don't feed it to him... well I have gone through the whole menu with the director and the food service company and I know all their egg and egg free foods.... I spend hours on my weekend duplicating any egg meals to egg free meals ahead of time so my son has the same food as his friends, I always send in acceptable food if the menu calls for an egg meal. Sorry I am ranting, I just am at a loss for what to do

Re: very frustrated with daycare

  • Maybe you should just bring his lunch every day.  I've had to do this with both my kids from day 1, and you do get used to doing it.  Either that, or keep some safe things on hand at daycare for times they unexpectedly change the menu, like a box of safe chicken nuggets in the freezer, etc.

  • I'm so sorry- that really stinks.  I hate menu changes.  (I also send "safe" versions of what the other kids are getting.)  The pp had a good idea about keeping some favorite foods in their freezer if possible.  Our sitter now keeps a package of safe hot dogs on hand for menu change days- those are his favorite so I know if he's eating a hot dog he could care less what the other kids get.

  • I agree. I send my DS's lunch everyday, and his teachers know not to even offer him anything from the school cafeteria. I am so sorry that he had to go through that. Bread, green beans and melon is a horrible lunch when you see other kids chowing down on mac and cheese.

I will add that my son is only 10 months, but even when he goes to the 1 year old transition class, I will continue the practice of sending his lunch.

  • Thanks maybe I will ask them to stash a favorite or two I'm the freezer as a backup for these types of days. I think part of this also has to do with his transition to the toddler room and the teachers getting comfortable with his allergies and the menu, I know they are super nervous (much more than I am).... hopefully next set of testing in December brings is good news

  • WHAT?!?!

The day care I worked at supplied ALL the food the children with allergies  were given same food (Minus the allergen)  there was never a problem with any child with allergies feeling left out or went hungry because they were not given food.

I agree with a previous poster and send in your own food.
