Crying tantrums??

Let me preface this my saying that my LO has never been a cry baby. The kid has really only ever cried if he's fallen or something and even then he will cry for 30 seconds and be over it. Lately though, mostly due to being over tired by the evening, he's been having full blown meltdowns over the littlest things if he is told not to do something. Like real tears, will cry for 5 minutes or more, etc etc. So, I know I'm supposed to ignore, but I feel TERRIBLE just letting him cry like that, probably because I'm really not used to seeing him so upset!! Is ignoring the right thing to do? After he gets in trouble, I try to calmly say to him "Austin, we don't pull on the lamp, you can get hurt if you do that and mommy doesn't want you to get hurt!" Which makes him cry even more. I hate it. So what do you do in the middle of a major hysterical meltdown to help them get through it?? I'm at a loss.

  • Sometimes the only thing you CAN do is ignore them because if you try to explain, pick up, etc. they will throw an even bigger fit.  Tantrums are fun. Confused

  • that was us last night. not fun.  it was 6pm and he usually eats dinner at 5:30 so he was hungry. I tried giving him pasta and he had the worst melt down i have seen so far. nothing worked. I took him away from the kitchen and sat with him on the couch (no tv). every time my DH came in he got worse so it old DH to leave for a bit.  I just sat there with him for a good 5 minutes while he cried and when he started calming down i hugged him and he just cried while hugging me and then i sang a song and he started "singing" with me.  I started talking about his pasta and how yummy it is and he said "eat eat" so we went to eat and he was the happiest kid ever.

I'm soooooo not looking forward to tantrums and melt downs for just no reason other than tired and hungry.

Not sure if what i did was right or wrong but like you, it's new and i can't sit and listen to him.. maybe after he starts doing them more frequently.

We have a VERY similar situation. DD is not a cryer at all... she is the same as your LO, cries for like 30 seconds if she falls but is a tough kid. Lately, she throws these fits of crying/rage! If I take something away or tell her no, one would think she broke a limb! It sounds like she is completely hysterical, however, there isn't a tear in her eye and she can shut it off LIKE THAT! She makes me crazy!

The other side of this for her is we are now hitting ... and the poor dog gets the brunt of it! She will be mad and throw her hand in the hair and poor Sasha, if she is near by, she gets a WHACK! I then tell DD we can't hit the doggie and then it goes into the "crying without tears" situation... I feel like I can't win!

I hope it's a phase and goes away soon... because right now, she makes me want to light myself on fire after about 10 of these "situations" in the evenings... Good luck to you!
