Success after IF

Last m/c post, I promise. Question about methotrexate.

Beta went down, remember? From 89 to 65. Well I got a call today and it went up to 71 which, according to my doc, "is pretty much the same". She said it takes the methotrexate shot about a week for it to work its magic. Going again Thursday and if it's gone up, I'm getting injection #2 on Friday.

I'm so so scared that she's just going to give up on my body and give me a D&C.I have no reason to think that, she hasn't mentioned anything about it but I'm being paranoid nonetheless.

I know you guys are tired of hearing me say this but I really really want this to be over so very bad.Part of me even wants my bleeding to get heavier so I at least know something is happening.

For those who've had the methotrexate shot, how long did it take for your beta to get down to 0? Did you have 1 or 2? Also, what did you mean when you said you had GI issues? (What does GI stand for?)

On another note, I think I'm going to steer clear of the boards for a bit. While I'm so very happy for you guys who are preggers, it doesn't change the fact that it stings everytime I see a BFP post. It's like taking the knife that's already in my heart and twisting it. We've all been there.

I talk to most of you guys on FB so it's not like I'll be vanishing into thin air.

This will also be my last m/c post. I'm sick of reading about it as much as you guys are. You guys have been awesome, from cheering me on when I got the BFP to mourning along with me when I lost my angel baby.

You guys are an amazing bunch. Period.

Re: Last m/c post, I promise. Question about methotrexate.

  • Ok, first of all, we are super sad that you have to post about your m/c but no one is sick of it. We are here to support each other in good times and bad. Having a miscarriage sucks d1ck and it is really lonely (more so than IF on it's own imo). When I first got my meth shot they told me I should expect my beta to go up and it did, by like 200 if I remember correctly. I did get two shots but I was told I would need two from the beginning. I think it took a few weeks to go to zero but I was over 1000 when I got the shot, you shouldn't need that long. Also, I don't think I really had increased bleeding (certainly not worse than pre shot where I was passing clots). GI= gastro intestinal. It sucked but didn't last to long, maybe a week. Sorry if there are no paragraphs. I'm on the iPad. Hang in there!

  • First let me say that I am so so sorry that you are still dealing with this.  When I had my m/c it took weeks - I mean from the beginning of July until mid-August or so for my betas to drop - and I had a D&C.  It sucked having to go back every week to see that it only dropped like 1 or 2 points.  I really hope things go in your favor.

I hope you board break give you some peace of mind.  Take care of yourself.

  • Sending big hugs your way. Please post about anything you want, we are here for you. Though I do understand how you just get sick of talking about after awhile. I felt that way, too. Hope it's over very soon for you.
  • I've never gotten a methotrexate shot so I can't answer your questions regarding that.  I just wanted to say again how sorry I am for your loss.  There are still people on this board who I can barely read their posts because their babies were born around the time the babies I lost should have been born.  It's hard, very hard, but I can promise it does get better with time.  Take all the time you need.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • I wish i could remember better, but i'm pretty sure i had 2 followup blood draws and they were maybe a week apart.  It was all pretty fast by my standards.  The worst part of the methotrexate was having to wait 2 months before trying again :(

    GL and hang in there!

ETA: and with numbers that low i don't see how there's any reason for a D&C.  Please, try not to worry about that.

  • I'm sorry this is so hard.  I remember it well. :(  As I posted before, I got two shots of MTX at the same time.  My betas had been bouncing between 75 and 50 for two weeks at that point and all ultrasounds showed a patch of something.  I had been bleeding irregularly for more than two weeks.

After the shot, I felt a bit queasy but nothing terrible.  I continued to have twice weekly beta tests until I reached zero, which took about two more weeks (from the day of the shot).  I never went back for another shot or shots.  The bleeding post shot was not dramatic -- just low level bleeding spotting for one full month post MTX.  It was about 6 weeks total of bleeding and it sucked.

As for a d&c, it shouldn't be necessary once you've had the shot.  My OB said it was either/or, not both.  I remember feeling exceptionally desperate when it just wouldn't end.  I wanted a D&C but couldn't be put to sleep for it and I refused to do it awake.  So the shot was my only other option.  :(

I hope things look up for you soon.

  • I don't know the answer, but huge hugs to you.  You've gone through so much.  I wish your beta would just go down so you could start to heal from this.  Thinking about you.
