Shoe questions

Harlie's not walking yet but her class at school is now requiring that they wear shoes since there are now 2 walkers in the class.  I have read barefoot is best for new walkers but since she has to wear shoes at school are Robeez ok?  We have a few pairs we were given as gifts.  Are they ok once she starts walking?  A friend of mine told me that Robeez are "glorified socks" made for mothers that want to decorate their child's feet.  If not the Robeez I already have, what should I be looking to get her? Thanks!

Re: Shoe questions

  • we used robeez (or target brand actually since they are cheaper) and we also used pedipeds.

  • The Stride Rite pre-walkers worked great for us. They're soft and flexible with a rubber sole so little ones can get traction. I wouldn't use the Robeez. They always struck me as fancy socks, too.

We started with Pedipeds because by the time Geneva was crawling, it was the dead of winter and we needed a way to keep her socks on. I would say moving to the Stride Rites gave her a little more stability because she wasn't slipping. DD wore her shoes at school and then we let her go barefoot around the house.

  • We often put Emma in something like these.  They're Robeez brand, but provide a little more stability.  They're super soft and flexible, but have traction on the bottom and are closer to "real shoes."

  • We used Robeez until she started walking.  Rowan's teachers discouraged us from using them once she starting walking because they found that the new walkers in the soft leather-bottomed shoes were slipping more frequently since the infant room is almost all linoleum tiles.

Once she started walking, they wanted high-tops for ankle stability.

These are exactly what we used at the start as well.

  • We used Pedipeds until Bailey started walking. Then we went got him measured and got more of a real tennis shoe for him from stride rite.

  • Daycare won't let us use the leather sole slippers Robeez since the kids go outside now.  We have those Robeez mini-shoes and some Stride-Rite stage 2 shoes that are more like tennis shoes. We do barefoot time at home.
  • We used pediped pre-walkers--however they did not hold up well. If your daycare will let you do Robeez, I recommend them.  Our pedi always said that bare feet was best for those learning to walk and that Robeez were a good compromise.
