TTC After a Loss

PNV and Folic Acid Question

I'm still taking my PNV every night and I have recently added a Folic Acid vitamin. My PNV already has 800mg and the Folic Acid vitamin is 800mg, so I'm getting 1,600mg per day.

Is it ok to do this? Does anyone else? Does it really make a difference? I haven't been to the Dr. since I started taking this, so I just wanted to ask.

Re: PNV and Folic Acid Question

  • I had the same concern and asked my doctor about possible overdosing, and was told that it is very difficult to overdose on Folic Acid. Your body pretty much gets rid of the extra it doesn't need. They prescribe really high dose to women that have a need for it, so a little extra is far better than not enough.

  • Check with your Dr. first.  I take PNV that contains 1 mg.  A lot of foods that we eat are already enriched with folic acid.  I don't think it is good to overdose on it.

This is what the box on my PNV says:

"Folic acid, especially in doses above 0.1 mg daily may obscure pernicious anemia associated with vitamin B12 deficiency, in that hematologic remission may occur while neurological manifestations remain progressive."

  • It's fine.  I take the 800 in my PNV, and then an additional 4.4 mg a day, so I basically get more than 5x that amount.  I haven't had any problems.

    I take 8,600mcg/day.

  • You're actually getting 1.6mg total...those measurements should be 800mcg :)

FA is water soluble so your body will absorb what it needs and then you will pee the rest out.  I have been on 4mg FA plus the almost 1mg that is in my PNV for a year and 3 months.  My OB actually does a lot of research work and he says that it won't hurt at all in the short term (as in taking it while in my child bearing years--so maybe for the next 5 years) but taking it much longer than that could lead to possible nerve damage.  So in summary--you are fine :)

Interesting--I haven't heard that before.  But I also take B6 and B12 vitamins because they help with the absorption of FA.

  • I am taking Folgard and baby aspirin by Dr's orders. I would call your Dr. to get his opinion.

  • I don't think that amount of folic acid is exessive at all. My OB has me taking an additional 4 mg due to history of congenital heart defects.

  • I'm also on PNV's with 1mg FA plus an additional 4 mg FA suppliment due to my last pregnancy resulting in neural tube defects.  My genetic counselor told me I would be on a high dose, my OB prescribed them and another nurse assured me this was a safe for me.

  • I'm taking my PNV (800mcg-1mg) plus an additional 3-4 800mcg of FA per my doctor (to get up to around 4mg total).  But I was diagnosed with one copy of a MTHFR gene mutation.
