3rd Trimester

Had a C-Section, could hope for a VBAC?

My OB told me that I need to make the decision soon for a VBAC or repeat c-section so I can get on the surgery schedule.  I have a DD who is 3 and my due date is Oct. 30.    I had the c-section because during the induction her heartbeat was decelerating too much.  Maybe I'll go into natural labor?  Who knows.  I didn't go into natural labor with my first pregnancy so more than likely won't happen again.  And OB told me no more induction meds after having a c-section.

Re: Had a C-Section, could hope for a VBAC?

  • I had a c-section with my first, and I'm planning for a VBAC. I never went into labor on my own, I was scheduled due to the size of my son (which ended up being estimated wrong). I have no idea if I will go into labor on my own, and I need it to happen before my due date, as I have GD this go-around, and I am not allowed to go past my due date. If he doesn't make his appearance by 9/12, I will have a RCS on 9/13.

  • I had a c-section with my DD for a similar reason and ended up being induced and doing a VBAC 10 months later with my DS. I had such an amazing experience with my VBAC and the recovery was so much easier. I think if it's what you want then you should go for it, but it's your choice and you should do whatever you feel most comfortable with.

  • You can totally hope for a VBAC.  Chances are actually pretty good that you can do it.  I have spent the last few months researching it for myself (I'm 40 weeks today) and from what I've learned, it sounds like you're a great candidate.  Every pregnancy is so different, that you never know if you'd go into labor on your own.  With my first, I was induced for preE, and ended up with the c/s for "failure to progress".  This time, I am contracting, and it looks like my cervix is trying to cooperate.

Bottom line:  If trying for a VBAC is important to you, go for it.  Your Dr. will watch you very closely, and if there is any trouble, you can always opt for a c-section later.  If it's not that big of a deal to you schedule the c/s.  Just keep in mind that it is much more difficult to find a doctor that will allow a VBAC after 2 c/s or more, so if you want to try... now's your best chance.

     Good luck!!

  • Your c-section was no fault of your own... You're a great candidate for a VBAC! If it's something you want to do, go for it. If you don't end up going into labor on your own, it's not like they can tell you "oops, too bad..." lol  They'll make room for you if a c-section is needed... Kind of silly they're forcing the choice on you so early :(

  • It sounds like you are an excellent candidate for a VBAC (from what I know - keeping in mind that I'm a FTM).  Is it possible to schedule a c-section at say, week 41.5 or something like that, so that if you do not go into labour on your own and your doctors don't want to give you induction drugs (due to what happened last time), then if you don't go into natural labour, then the c-section is scheduled and ready to go.  Maybe they don't do that - again, FTM, so I'm really just guessing.

  • Because your c/s was b/c of heart decels i think you can totally try for a vbac if you wanted to.  I'm definitely trying for a vbac!  I had a vag. delivery w/ my 1st and a c/s w/ my 2nd and i can speak from experience the vag. delivery recovery was 10x's better than from a c/s.  I'd choose a vbac any day.
