What do you do with your newborn when awake?

So my little girl has become more awake after her feedings.. instead of going to sleep right after a feeding she will be awake for an hour or so. Of course I check her diaper, burp her, cuddle her.. but sometimes it doesnt seem like enough. She likes her swing but she doesnt like it enough to stay in it the time she is awake. I have a vibrating chair and she likes that for about ten minutes. I love holding her but I never can get anything done. Any suggestions? I just dont know if there is anything I can do to help stimulate her during the day or to calm her at night to sleep. (besides the normal stuff I listed above) Also.. when do you start introducing "tummy time" ?

  • I dont have my outside baby yet but I would try to take a walk with her after feeding and see if that helps

  • I believe in starting tummy time early as an infant/toddler teacher at a childcare center.  Do you have an activity gym she can lay under on her back? Those are also great for tummy time because you can move the toys that hang and put them on the floor in front of her.

Singing, taking walks, looking at books are all things you can do even though she is so tiny.  The more language you expose her to the better for language acquisition in the long run.

You can also get some kind of wrap or sling to carry her in around the house etc so you can get things done but still have her close to you.

  • What about getting a moby wrap? This way, LO can hang out with you and you have your hands free to do other things.
  • Newborns can get overstimulated, so don't rush to get into the idea of needing to keep her entertained just yet. She's got a lot to soak in about the outside world as it is! :)

  • I would suggest using a carrier or sling. You can move around easier while still cuddling.

  • My little guy likes to sit in his boppy and he likes to listen to music.  He seems to like what we listen to, so you could try that.

  • We do a little tummy time every day, on the Boppy or with her laying her upper body on my legs.

As for getting things done, when they are newborns who want to be held all the time, the only thing you can do is wear them.

  • Mine is a big fan of the ceiling fan and recessed lighting. Lol. Honestly, they were in complete dark for the last nine months. Simply being awake inside of a normal house rocks their world right now.

I agree with a lot of this.  Just this past week we started doing tummy time for a little bit each day.  Other than that, we talk a lot to him, take walks, hang out etc.

  • I have a play mat, a sleepy wrap and a boppy.. lol I just didnt know how old she had to be. I think I will try to wear her today and read to her. Most of her belly button stump has fallen off this morning but I have been doing tummy to tummy with her. Thanks for the suggestions!

  • OP thanks for posing this (and thanks for the responses) I was wondering when to start tummy time as well and concerned about over doing the stimulation. Parker LOVES being in the Moby wrap.

  • I agree with lots of the suggestions.  They are little people in a new big world.  They just need to know you are nearby and hang out with you.  They like the sound of your voice andthe touch/warmth of your body.  So just being with them and talking/singing/reading, and watching/making eye contact with them is all great!

  • Why not wear her? Buy a wrap, put her in and get some things done. She wants to be with you - why wouldn't she you're her mommy :)
