Cramping while running

How do I avoid this? It's getting on my nerves. As soon as I warm up and get going at a good speed, I start cramping up on my side and have to stop and just walk at a fast pace. Any recommendations?

  • Are you hydrated enough? Do you need to go to the bathroom (sounds silly)

  • This has been happening to me since 25 weeks (I am now 31).  It usually only last for my warm up.  My Dr. thinks it is just my muscles loosening into the run (she is also a runner).  What I do is count on the first mile as a warm up.  I run for a bit then stop and stretch and walk a bit and do that off and on and then usually by mile 2 I am on track.  Very annoying....but I keep telling myself that any activity is better than no activity.  It is different than how I used to run, but I am sure after pregnancy it will all come back.  Good luck with this!

  • Try focusing on your breathing, take deep breaths.  I am almost always able to resolve cramps that way.

  • i agree with breathing....try inhaling through your nose , exhale through the mouth

  • I had the same issue awhile back and found that breathing in deeply through my mouth and out through my nose really helped. Its difficult, but when you breath through your mouth you are getting oxygen deeper down in you then when you breath through your nose. My friend's boyfriends who is an EMT told me this and it works like a charm every time. I get side cramps a lot and this really helps. You have to keep doing it till the cramp subsides, but it works!

  • Drink lots of water. It helps with cramps and also, I find, it helps make my workout easier - I'm not as tired.
