teacherjess:
It definitely was not nasty or anything like that. I'll admit that it's not the best area of town, and there were definitely some questionable moms checking out at the same time as me (were taking their babies home on the RTA, were very young, etc.), but the hospital was VERY clean and the security was very high. I am picky about that kind of thing and I have no complaints about the cleanliness, the smell, the sanitary things, etc. I'd deliver at MVH ten times over delivering at Good Sam or Grandview or any of those. Shudder.
I was searching the board for reviews of Dayton hospitals/OBs and found your comment above. Could you give more detail on why Good Sam is not a good place to deliver? One of the OBs I am considering delivers there. I am also considering MVH and Kettering Medical Center. Thanks!
Re: ::teacherjess::
Hey! My opinion on Good Sam is based on a few things: first, the location is probably the worst hospital location in all of Dayton. I know you would be in a hospital and inside the whole time, but Good Sam is in a fairly bad neighborhood-- right on Salem and Philadelphia-- and that's saying something from someone who delivered at MVH. I know location's not everything, but...having spent some time in that area of town, it gets creepy and somewhat violent at night, and when you have choices....it could matter.
Also, when I researched a little bit online, it seemed to have lower ratings than MVH and Kettering in a number of different areas. There are some fairly scary online reviews, as well, and a few years back, three of our high school athletes who were treated there for injuries contracted staph infections at three different times. One of my students contracted an infection that was so bad that he had to go back in for surgery to remove the tissue surrounding the infection. I was pregnant at the time and that sealed the deal for me.
I guess, in my mind, when you have choices, there's something to be said for reputations. MVH and Kettering (as well as Kettering Southview) both have excellent reputations in the area. Kettering Southview has even earned some kind of special designation for being one of only a few hospitals in the area that has a super-devoted LC team for new moms. Whatever you choose, good luck! I love my OB but he is south of town; not sure where you're at. A few of the girls on this board use him as well and he is highly recommended.
