Nervous

I am taking DD to thevallergist for the first time tomorrow. They set me a Rx for a numbing cream to apply to her back 1 hour before the appointment. Can anyone tell me what to expect? Anything I need to be sure to ask about? Any help is appreciated - I am really nervous!

Re: Nervous

  • My DD has been patch tested twice now and has never had numbing cream. In fact, she acts like it doesn't bother her at all. I just bring some books, toys, or just let her explore the exam room and she is just a happy kid. Once they put the allergens on their backs, it only takes about 20 minutes till they come back and read the results. DD's back was a bumpy mess the 1st time (they do a whole panel of allergens) and she was 9 months. She didn't cry, try to itch, the nurses were amazed. Bring some new toys or books, or a paci, snacks or a bottle/cup and before you know it, it will all be over. GL and hope you get some helpful results!

  • same as pp.. we've done the skin test twice and never needed a numbing cream. (actually i never knew they offer it)  They might use it so that your DD is more comfortable.  My son did squirm during the pricking but he was fine, (it was more of a squirm b/c someone other than mom or dad just touched him) i don't think a numbing cream is necessary but since it's a child I'm guessing they want your LO to be as comfortable as possible.

I'm curious if the numbing resists the scratch feeling.  My son wasn't in pain from the pricking but he was uncomfortable when the itching began.  He wanted to rip his skin off from his back..  I never knew how far he can reach his back with those little hands.

good luck! hope you get some good news.

  • Aw, I didn't realize they did it for kids that young.  She will be okay!  You will just need to distract her, but it might even be easier given how young she is...no running around trying to itch her back!  You will probably have to sit with her on your lap facing you to keep from touching her back.

This.  I think if you bring a few distractions for her you'll be fine.
