Just messaged dh's cousin on fb b/c he posted a pic of fiance's daughter in his car in a booster seat (the kind that is just the bottom, with a shoulder belt). She is three. Just freaked me out, but I wanted to make sure I had some good info to send him since I know he means well.

Re: does anyone have good car seat info?
All you have to do is look at the manual that came with the booster to know that that's the wrong size/age for that booster seat.
https://www.aap.org/advocacy/releases/carseat2011.htm
THat says "Children should transition from a rear-facing seat to a forward-facing seat with a harness, until they reach the maximum weight or height for that seat. Then a booster will make sure the vehicle?s lap-and-shoulder belt fit properly. The shoulder belt should lie across the middle of the chest and shoulder, not near the neck or face. The lap belt should fit low and snug on the hips and upper thighs, not across the belly. Most children will need a booster seat until they have reached 4 feet 9 inches tall and are between 8 and 12 years old."

I just don't understand the "rush" to go to something that's less safe??
Yes, exactly!
In the picture he had, the little girl was completely sideways, sleeping, barely a seatbelt on (she's in a booster w/ no sides) If he got in a crash she would fly right out of that seat in a second. Obviously everyone isnt on the Bump, but I am always surprised how many people have no idea about car seat laws/ safety etc.
Exactly!!
My BIL's Girlfriend has her 2 year old girl and 3 year old boy both in regular booster seats =/ I know its because she cant fit 3 proper car seats in the back seat of her car but it still makes me cringe..
Meg is in a high-back booster with a lap belt. I know some moms prefer a 5-pt harness at age 4.
My BIL uses just a booster for his 5 y/o and since the strap rubs on his neck, they let him put the shoulder strap behind him. And I am "that mom" who says something every time I see it. His booster came with a strap to hold the shoulder strap off of his neck. Do they use it? Nope.
Steal my kids picture or pretend they are yours, I will find where you live and ship all of their dirty diapers to your doorstep. Promise.
Right but Meg is the "right" age to be able to move to that. You didn't move her at 2 or anything!
And the only way to know if your kid is ready for a booster is if the booster fits correctly. So if your BIL's kid ends up with the seat belt rubbing on his neck then that means it's not fitting right so they need a different seat or they need to use it correctly. (I know you know that!) I can't imagine letting my kid be in a lap belt only.
